Madigan indictment sends shockwaves through Illinois political chambers: "Today may be the darkest day in Illinois government history"

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The federal indictment against former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan on Wednesday sent shockwaves through the halls of state and local government, with politicians from both sides of the aisle condemning Madigan's alleged behavior as "deplorable" and "disturbing."

Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, a political foe of Madigan's for years, said Wednesday "may be the darkest day in Illinois government history." "This is not just an indictment against Michael Madigan, but it's an indictment against the Democrat Party of Illinois that he ran for decades," he said. "But the public needs to get answers from the speaker, and also the Democrats and the governor, of why they did not take action against this man earlier; when there was an opportunity, when the whole house of representatives, through the Special Investigation Committee, began a process in which we did have the ability to remove him for cause."

After federal prosecutors reached a deferred prosecution agreement with ComEd in July 2020, in which it admitted to a sweeping bribery scheme that sought to curry favor with Madigan, Durkin and other House Republicans helped launch a Special Investigating Committee to look into the possibility of disciplinary action against Speaker, but the panel ended its probe without any finding of misconduct against Madigan. (My emphasis.)

The 'Com Ed' referred to in the part of the article that I've italicized is Commonwealth Edison. Commonwealth Edison is the giant utility that provides most of the electric power and gas for all of the Chicago area." Com Ed "admitted to a sweeping bribery scheme that sought to curry favor with Madigan." With an admission and cooperation like that it's sure that the feds have Madigan nailed to the wall and he soon to be spending most of the rest of his retirement in a federal prison.

Every now and then, the comrades have to shoot one of their own to make the sheeple think they are being fair.

Hasn't Illinois always been known as the state where there former leadership sometimes makes the license plates?

"may be the darkest day in Illinois government history."

Oh, please. In a state where the unofficial motto of the Chicago City Council is "Ubi Mea" (where's mine?), multiple governors in jail, Paul Powell, and the list goes on, John Madigan will have to share the spotlight.

Madigan must be able to provide evidence of corruption against dozens of Illinois politicians.

If he has a good lawyer he should be able to get off very lightly.

Did he forget Governor Blagojevich auctioning off Obama's former Senate seat before it even got cold?

Agreed!
The guy was going for the “Most Hyperbole Award” with that phrase. I wonder if this latest Madigan thing - as bad as it is - will even make the top 10.

Oops. First time I said John Madigan, who is or was a local reporter in Chicago.

None. The feds got, ComED’s cooperation by entering into a deferred prosecution agreement with ComEd. A deferred prosecution agreement generally means that the beneficiary will not be prosecuted as long as he or she cooperates with the feds. They were out to get Madigan and they were perfectly willing to enter the agreement with ComEd because it appears to have been the linchpin of much of the criminality that occurred. Getting ratted out can be a real bitch.

The real question is, does Mike Madigan have dirt on Hillary?

This man has absolutely run the Illinois legislature for a long time. He was running it when I was in college back in Chicago in the early ‘80s, when ethnic Pro-Life Democrats were still a thing, and the Hyde Park Pro-Life organization were taken in by him.

It was assumed that he was a driving force of corruption in elections and made side deals with beneficiaries of legislation for his party’s benefit. That he was stealing money is little surprise to anyone from the area.

I am sure that ComEd, like all companies of that sizxe and scope, has training programs teaching employees not to participate in bribery schemes. Will any heads roll there? Or are the folks at the top exempt from such company rules?

“LAST THREE GOVERNORS WENT TO PRISON!”

Right, and scores of people are shot, and many killed, including children EVERY SINGLE WEEKEND.

Just keep voting Dem, guys! They are doing a heck of a job.

The Democrat Party of Illinois is a criminal organization and has been for years. Silly to pretend otherwise.

“How many ComEd executives are being prosecuted?”

They had to “pay to play”...it’s the Chicago way and only game in town. Tip of the ice berg.
