Education departments are the ‘dumbest part of every college’: Hillsdale College president
The College Fix ^ | July 5, 2022 | College Fix Staff

“Ed departments…they’re the dumbest part of every college,” the president of Hillsdale College said in a video published June 30 by News Channel 5.

“If you study physics, there’s a subject, right? How does the physical world work? That’s hard to figure out,” President Larry Arnn said at a meeting in June with the governor of Tennessee.

“Education is the study of how to teach,” Arnn (pictured) said in the video. “Is that a separate art? I don’t think so.”

“Do they ever talk about anything except what they’re going to do to these kids?” he said.

News Channel 5 posted two composite videos on June 30. Together, they include segments of Arnn’s speech, a sit-down conversation between Arnn and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee, and critical commentary from a Democratic congressional representative and an education lobbyist.

The footage of Arnn and Lee was taken secretly at a June private reception in Franklin, Tennessee, according to the Chattanooga Times Free Press.

Lee announced in January a plan to partner with Hillsdale College to set up 50 publicly-funded charter schools throughout the state, News Channel 9 reported.

In his speech, Arnn criticized American college departments of education and K-12 public school teachers. He continued his critique in conversation with Lee.

“The teachers are trained in the dumbest parts of the dumbest colleges in the country,” he said.

“They’re messing with people’s children, and they feel entitled to do anything to them,” Arnn said.

“We’re going to try to demonstrate that you don’t have to be an expert to educate a child,” he said. “Because basically anybody can do it.”

“Now, because they are appointing all these diversity officers, what are their degrees in?” Arnn said. “Education. It’s easy. You don’t need to know anything.”

National Review author, CBS article confirm Arnn’s critique

Arnn is correct in asserting that most education degrees are “easy” majors, Kevin Williamson wrote July 1 in National Review.

“Education programs are not very academically rigorous,” Williamson wrote. “Drop a 3.9 GPA education major into a physics program and chances are that he isn’t going to finish at all.”

Education majors on average have the lowest standardized-test scores in high school but finish college with the highest GPAs, Williamson wrote, citing a 2011 CBS article.

My cat is a teacher.
She teaches people how to bring food to her.
She never goes to them for food.

My brother is a robotics engineer who decided to teach high school CAD and Design.

Even though he had a degree, he had to get an education degree and a Masters to become a teacher.

He said that it was an absolute joke. In one class, the instructor was talking about how to do some “complex” maneuver in MS Word. My brother raised his hand and said “or you can just hit the Function key and the number 7 (or something like that) and Word does it for you.”

He said stuff like that was pretty common

My Wife, one of the best Teachers there is, even if it is my opinion, given the results she got turning kids around who were 2, 3, or even 4 years behind the average, would heartedly agree and has said so many times to me.

The Education major is one of the easiest there is.

That being said, a Good Teacher, with a willing heart to do good things, goes through a TON of CRAP from their school district’s these days as it is more about indoctrination rather than the 3 R’s and critical thinking.

This has been true for decades. Ed departments were the bottom of the academic barrel until the various grievance studies majors came along and undercut the ed departments. Sort of like Biden beating Carter to the bottom.

I find it hard to believe that they could possibly be any dumber than journalism majors. But not impossible.

a coworker who was a pharmacist used to say that while she was studying constantly, and doing lab work, her education major husband to be was out drinking and having fun....

there is no comparison to real studies vs "education"....

Poor guy. He told the truth. Doesn’t he know that hasn’t been popular in this country since 2008?

They should eliminate education majors and have persons with actual degrees teach those classes. So a physics major teaches physics, a math major teaches math, a chemistry major teaches chemistry, with no EDU or certification requirements. If they are smart enough to teach college students (e.g. tutoring or as lecture assistants) then teaching kids should be easy.

Getting the ED degree is easy enough, from what I saw back when I was getting my BSME and studying in the library with my ED-major friends. Still, they have to deal with a lot of garbage in their jobs. I wouldn’t want to do it.

The ongoing joke when I was in undergrad was that an education major (especially elementary ed) = Mrs Degree. Not so much if one was going onward to a PHD if it involved some other field (History, etc.).

Rightly or wrongly, Journalism wasn't thought very high of, either. If you based it on the college newspaper, you might have been on the "rightly" side. I remember some good stories about the antics of the staff--to think they are the people spouting the "news" today.

The only good coming from the takeover of our schools by the left, is that those who choose teaching as a job represent the bottom 20% of the college graduates in this country. They are the least competent.

Worked with some resonaably smart guys (but woke....).

Noticed they always right-click to copy. I have to do that but because of mouse problems.

I said you know you can just Control-C, right?

They looked at me like I just stepped off a spaceship.

They were purveyors of liberal Christianity as well.

Oh and they liked Barry.

No surprise there.

Yes!

So a physics major teaches physics,

By which is meant someone with a BS (at least) in Physics, not physics education.

With the caveat: Many subjects aren't a full time job; some crossover is to be expected. A teacher with a BS in Physics, for example, is more than qualified to teach (some) high school math.

teaching kids should be easy

In fact, however, it's not. Many people with real graduate degrees in "X" have trouble explaining "X" at a high school student's level of understanding. I'm not justifying education degrees (Heaven forbid!), I'm pointing out real issue new teachers must address. BTDT.
