While President Biden was overseas a few days ago, he blamed “Russia Russia Russia” for inflation and high gas prices. Then yesterday Biden pivoted to blaming gas station owners, telling them to lower prices and to “do it now”:

My message to the companies running gas stations and setting prices at the pump is simple: this is a time of war and global peril.

Bring down the price you are charging at the pump to reflect the cost you’re paying for the product. And do it now.

What an ignoramus. How much profit is made per gallon of gas at the gas staton level? A few cents?

Like the grocery stores, they make the profit up in volume. How about lowering taxes on gasoline?

Local gas station manager told me that ones getting rich from his station are the state and federal governments.

The profit from selling gas at today’s new high price today gets spent tomorrow refilling the station’s tanks with more gasoline to sell, which now costs more for the station owner to buy, also.

And that pricing situation gets worse for the station owner when gas prices are falling, but the station’s tanks are full of gasoline bought at the previously higher gas prices. Ouch …

So, yeah, it’s those greedy capitalist station owners sticking it to us. Blame it all on them and Russia, Russia, Russia, too!

We live in a marketplace era of knee jerk reactions. Recall how fast oil cratered due to COVID 19, and then how fast the ruble was trashed when Russia entered the Ukraine. Any attempt at price controls will lead within days to shortages. One can only imagine the repercussions. Refiners will end up with having to store more gas as retailers won’t pay their prices. Eventually that will trickle back to oil producers who will have to leave pipelines full or store oil on rail cars.
