At least 38 people have been wounded, nine of them fatally, in shootings across Chicago so far this weekend.
Last year, over 100 people were shot over the long Fourth of July weekend, 19 of them were killed. Seeking to prevent a similar surge in violence this year, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said residents should expect to see a heavier police presence in their neighborhoods.
In fatal attacks this weekend, a woman was killed and a gunman was among two others wounded in a shootout Friday night in Chinatown, Chicago police said.
A man and another gunman were shooting at each other about 10:50 p.m. in the 2200 block of South Wentworth Avenue, police said. A 24-year-old woman was struck in the torso and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where she died due to her injuries.
A second woman, 42, was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with a gunshot wound to her hand, police said. She was listed in good condition. One of the gunmen, a 38-year-old man, was shot in the buttocks and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was in critical condition.
Three people were shot, one fatally, in a backyard early Sunday morning in Grand Crossing on the South Side.

A couple of years ago my wife a nurse for 50+ years, and I were in a line at a local Deli.
There was a young couple behind us. He was looking at my wife and vice versa.
I said, “Okay you know each other, and can’t place each other, and I made a guess Turned out that he had been a patient in the FP practice she worked at decades.
He and his wife were new Navy Docs and had just finished a 30 day tour of duty at Cook County and were headed for to LA to do the same in LA hospitals.
60 Years ago my wife was a rookie RN at a Chicago near Cook County. Armed Security guards at her hospital walked with them to and from the duo parking area.
More range time?
Guns are illegal but yet every 13 yr old gang banger has a Stolen gun. More gun permits and more self defense shootings are needed. Crime numbers should soon have a steep drop in New York.
Who is to blame?
The “gun violence” by families at home together in the suburbs having dinner, playing with their children and tucking them in for bed. Time to snatch the guns. /S
40+ years ago my wife was a nurse at the University of Utah hospital, working the night shift. The parking was a good distance from the hospital. She expressed her concerns about feeling unsafe, all management would do is tell her to call security for an escort. You know who worked security then? Ted Bundy. My wife had long straight hair then, just like all Bundy’s victims.
