Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed Friday that western alliances in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine are "pushing" Russia and Belarus to unite.
Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko has thus far been able to keep Minsk’s direct involvement out of the war in Ukraine, but comments by Putin posted to the Kremlin’s website suggest this may not be the case for long.
"The unprecedented political and sanctions pressure from the so-called ‘collective West’ is pushing us to speed up the unification processes," the Kremlin chief said according to Russian media outlet RIA. "After all, together it is easier to minimize the damage from illegal sanctions, it is easier to master the production of demanded products, develop new competencies and expand cooperation with friendly countries."

Unification will probably happen when Lukashenko is ready to retire. He has held off from unification this long because he does not want to lose power.
Can’t help but wonder what the people think of that plan.
Putin is channeling Stalin, and probably knows it.
Never forget the Russian culture was heavily influenced by the Mongol hordes.
Given the public uprisings at the last election in Belarus, I’ve been thinking that if the war escalates out of Ukraine, NATO should quickly take Belarus.
It would probably be welcomed by the Belarusians.
It would eliminate Ukraine having to worry about defending it’s northern border while fighting Russia.
Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania and Latia would all have one less border to worry about. And since Belarus allowed Russia to attack from it’s territory, it’s a border I’m sure they are all worried about.
Lukashenko is already making excuses for becoming Putin’s obedient lap dog.

“Unification will probably happen when Lukashenko is ready to retire. He has held off from unification this long because he does not want to lose power.”
Maybe he plans to get a promotion out of the deal - he sells out Belarus, and gets in line to replace Putin, as Czar of expanded Russia.
Putin is going to have to retire, if sanctions are ever going to be lifted. Lukashenko is reportedly acceptable to the Russian security services elite, who run things there.
Putin has too much baggage to continue on as the Capo. Its just business...

If Putin tries to expand the Ukraine war to NATO territory, NATO should destroy every rail bridge in Belarus plus all its petroleum refining capacity. Post war all the railroads in Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine should be converted to standard gauge.
“Can’t help but wonder what the people think of that plan.”
Do you think Putin gives a damn about what the people think?
Oh I know he doesn’t. However fighting the “peasants” on two fronts might just do him in.
“Can’t help but wonder what the people think of that plan.”
i was wondering the same thing ...
Lukashenko is a thug. He’s a dictator. He is not popular in Belarus. Maybe the people are just tired of him, as he’s been in power for 28 years; and, in fact, he is the first and only president of Belarus. He is tolerated by Putin, but only as long as Lukashenko serves his purpose as Putin’s ankle-biting mutt to annoy Putin’s foes.
Russia: How ‘bout we unite into one large, brotherly country, comrade?
Belarus: No.
Russia: How ‘bout we kill you?
Belarus: Let’s unite.
I think BelaRus <10 Million peeps.
Ukes ~ 40 million.
Rooskies ~ 146.

It's a wild, wild world....
They lost one million people last year so it’s now down to 145.
Can’t help but wonder what the people think of that plan.

If like the Crimea, they prospered when the Russians began to run things. Crimea still has the hottest economy in the entire region, jobs, jobs, jobs, the highest “ GDP” in the world…on a roll…380,000 plus people moved into the Crimea when Vlad took control…when they left the corrupted Ukie government control, they prospered ( and currently are).
….the word is Crimea is turning into “ a second Singapore “…..stated as fact from major financial institutions. I expect the same with the Donbass provinces when Vlad finishes “liberating” them from a corrupted Ukie rule ( 99 percent secured)…..and Vlad says Checkmate , again.
Pooty-poot is feeling his oats.
