Uvalde school district police chief to resign from city council amid criticism

The Uvalde, Texas, school district police chief is resigning from his community’s city council amid criticism of the response to the shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers at Robb elementary in May. Pedro “Pete” Arredondo told the Uvalde Leader-News that he was stepping down from the city council post to which he was sworn in just seven days after the massacre, the outlet reported on Saturday. Soccer teammates of Tess Mata, who died in the shooting, cry, visit a makeshift memorial in Uvalde after the shooting. Why did they wait? Uvalde anger grows over bungled police response Read more A statement from Uvalde’s mayor, Don McLaughlin, said the city government had learned of Arredondo’s intent to resign through the local newspaper and called it “the right thing to do”. However, McLaughlin’s statement added, the city had not seen “a letter or any other documentation of [Arredondo’s] resignation” as of Saturday afternoon. According to the Leader-News, Arredondo continued maintaining that he was not the commander of officers who waited more than an hour before confronting and killing the shooter at Robb on 24 May. His statement is contrary to the findings from the state’s department of public safety chief, Steve McCraw, who concluded it was Arredondo’s call to delay officers that day despite the fact that they had adequate numbers and weaponry to put a stop to the carnage much sooner than they did. Arredondo told the Leader-News that he offered prayers to the school massacre victims’ families. “In speaking with other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same: continue to support the families, continue to support our community and definitely to keep our faith,” Arredondo said.

They were paralyzed by fear and should be held accountable for their inaction.

“Arredondo continued maintaining that he was not the commander of officers who waited more than an hour before confronting and killing the shooter at Robb on 24 May,”

Maybe one of the crackerjack investigative journalists covering this story can investigate Arredondo’s above statement?

not sure he will go to prison, although he absolutely should be on trial. Regardless, I suspect this guy will off himself at some point.

To me, a big question is why a school district with 4000 students needs an independent police force at all.

This concept of school systems having their separate police departments needs to be re-evaluated.

It appears they are no more than an extension of the school administration and subject to covering up matters and some become no more than “go fetch-it” types.

I suspect police retirees would find this good work, other retirees as well, and these folks aren’t apt to do the dangerous work police do an every average day. They are not going to take any chances.

City police departments and county sheriff’s offices are best equipped to take care of the schools. Let school assignments be an important part of their organizational structure.

The Texas ‘legal system’ is all a bunch of crooked payola mafia-style good ol boys.

From the cops, to the DAs, to the judges. The whole system needs to be scrapped entirely.

When you leave it to them, at best they’ll drag your body to the morgue.

Free Republic is going the way of the Boy Scouts. When I first joined most Freepers understood that government was almost always incompetent and was indifferent to school children at best. For some reason we have a considerable population here that believes government mercenaries should care more about school children than the parents. If you have kids in school and you aren’t apart of their security you are stupid.
