just wanted to point out one aspect of the whole deal:

A horrid story about contaminated blood (HEP B, HEP C, AIDS) that was drawn from Arkansas prisoners and then the blood products (plasma) were sold out of the country with virtually no screening and no information that it came from a prison population... a lot of it went to Canada where some of it was used but the lab there (Connaught Laboratories) also resold some overseas to places like the UK). The company running the deal in Arkansas was Health Management Associates and they sold the blood for $50/unit and paid the prisoners $7 (and not in cash). They were awarded the contract for the blood collection the year Bill Clinton became governor…..
The results were that more than 1,000 Canadians contracted HIV and 20,000 had hepatitis C. Not sure who many Americans were infected but lawyers won settlements for about 8,000 haemophilia sufferers. Also not sure how many people in the UK were affected but likely another 5,000 or so.
Bill Clinton’s fingers were all over the money side of this... The president of HMA was Leonard Dunn and he was a close friend of Bill Clinton and Vince Foster. In fact, Dunn chaired Clinton’s re-election campaign and later was appointed by Clinton to the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission. As for Foster, we all know what happened to him in 1993 in Macy Park.

One of the most scathing aspects of this issue is how much sold blood comes from people who donate blood after being convinced that it will be used locally to fill blood shortages. In many cases it’s a lie.

My brother got Hep C, presumably from a transfusion, probably not from this batch as he was in the US. Then again, who knows where this stuff went or what other shenanigans were going on?
