US to boost Europe military presence as Nato strengthens defences
Financial Times ^ | June 29, 2022 | Henry Foy

The US will significantly increase its military deployments in Europe with additional troops and weaponry, as part of the largest scaling up of Nato defences since the cold war in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The US will establish a permanent headquarters for its 5th Army Corps in Poland, send 5,000 additional troops to Romania and increase rotational deployments in the Baltic states, Biden said, as part of efforts to stiffen Nato’s first line of defences against possible attack.

Two squadrons of US F-35 fighter aircraft will be sent to the UK, Biden added, in addition to stationing air defence systems in Italy and Germany and increasing the number of US naval destroyers to Spain to six from four.

The new deployments will be in addition to the more than 100,000 US troops currently stationed in Europe, which had already increased by about 20,000 since Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine four months ago.

The US deployments come as Nato prepares to agree new defence plans that will increase more than seven-fold the number of troops on high alert to respond to an invasion to more than 300,000 from 40,000 currently.

Russia has a relatively small population.
Russia has a relatively small economy.
Russia’s military has not covered itself in glory in Ukraine.

Why would Russia now pick a fight with NATO? Does anyone think that Russia is going to invade Western Europe?

People should understand that something else is going on. Maybe WE are picking a fight with THEM? We are the prime movers here — do we understand our motives? We delude ourselves if we think that we are the Good Guys.

I don’t th8nk there’s a fight.

Just a mutually agreed upon noisy occupation.

As for the alleged NATO buildup, I’m wondering it’s really just a cover for money laundering to the EU.

Its PIIGS problem is about to go nuclear, I suspect.

I couldn’t agree more. As I keep saying we are committing suicide in our desperate attempt to hold on to our past hegemony. We just keep doubling down.

One notes that the EU comprises about 450 million, and Europe including the non-EU nations 700 million in total. So "we need to lead the new world order" Biden wants a population of half that size to add to the military in Europe? And pay for it and more? Because NATO isn't strong enough in Europe?

This is the military industrial complex on steroids.

Meanwhile with the mandate for vaccinations ongoing in the US military, retention is way down, and the DoD has "relaxed" new recruit criteria to not even have a GED because new recruitment is down in double digit percentages. Even the kids don't want to be fodder for Biden's new world order.

I assume we are going to “print it” as we will all the other boondoggles they agreed to in that God-forsaken summit...:-)

$200 billion from us for the global international programs for poor countries for climate control, gender equity, etc.

And brand new green proposals for energy.

Meanwhile our border being invaded. Maybe some day we won’t be the world’s policeman. Donald Trump started to fix that. But Biden may get us into WW-III.

Well, when the U.S. has 750 military bases in 80 different countries and, according to the FT article 191 in Germany alone, I would say you have a long wait for ending our role as “the world’s policeman” or “the world’s dictator” which is how many countries see it...:-)

I truly don’t think there are any Good Guys here. But one thing is for sure. Russia is the Bad Guy. It was Putin who sent tanks rolling across an international border. He started all the killing.

Having said that, I agree with you that Russia is no threat to NATO. So why are we beefing up our forces there? And why is NATO expanding its rapid-response force?

The whole thing seems unnecessarily provocative.

“So why are we beefing up our forces there ?”

Could it be for a full scale assault in Ukraine ? Don’t know, just asking. Russians will do their usual sabre rattling but will get crushed in a matter of days.
