Oil shippers are hiding Russian cargoes by paying in Chinese yuan, exchanging weapons for crude, and 'going dark'

Oil shippers are using several tactics to hide that they're carrying Russian crude exports..

Using China's yuan instead of the dollar in trading and exchanging weapons or food for supplies are just two.

Russian oil exports bought by India and then re-exported may end up in European gas stations..

...

as Europe and the US try to stem imports.

At the same time, concerns are growing that India, which has snapped up Russian oil at discounted prices, has the potential to be used as a "back door" for those supplies to enter Europe

...

Yuan-ruble trading volumes have soared 1,067% since Russia began its war with Ukraine, though this is broadly seen as a sign of the allies strengthening ties to help weaken the influence of the US.

Another masking ploy is to make ship-to-ship transfers of Russian oil on the high seas, which typically involves a Russian ship unloading oil to another vessel from a neutral party. That's increasingly becoming common practice as a way to hamper tracking and as buyers try to keep quiet any affiliation to sanctions-hit Moscow.

To achieve this, more and more vessels are "going dark" , meaning shippers turn off the tanker's ID system to make it difficult to monitor its movements.

"If a country or oil operator wants to hide the source of crude or oil products, it can very easily do so," Ajay Parmar, an oil market analyst at ICIS

...

Nirmala Sitharaman, India's finance minister, defended the huge volumes of Russian oil purchases, saying the government is acting in the interest of the country's economy,

...

In June, India has bought 1 million barrels of Russian oil a day on average, compared with 30,000 in February,

So much for trying to sanction a country whose products are in demand from other countries.

Africa and South America and most of Asia couldn’t care less about NATO sanctions on Russia. It’s NATO that is going to be hurt.

Clever people have always made good money evading inane rules and regulations. BTW. within five years thanks to Biden’s green lunacy and refinery closures with no new construction, the US will also be forced to import refined products such as gasoline and diesel fuel from foreign refiners.

Mexico can’t wait for California to buy even more electricity from them than they already do.

There was a post about a new satellite tech that negates going dark and enables ships to be tracked no matter where that are.

I read a couple weeks back in another thread that India was buying Russian crude at a $35 discount/barrel from the Brent Sea Crude price.
Also, that the Indians had increased their purchases 770,000 barrels/day. This trade works out to $27 million dollars in profit/day.

This type of profit/day will motivate people to do almost anything to keep this going. It is an incredible windfall for those involved. It is led to multiple ways to hide these shipments.

Greed is good.
Greed works.

Now it’s a million for India, and 700,000 more for China. Just those two countries have now made up for 70% of pre-war European imports.

Not PROFIT.
Whac a mole...

Rus extraction costs are around $45/barrel and total production costs are $50-60/barrel depending on location.

Brent is running about $110.
The Indians and Chinese are bottom feeders and will pay even less with each shipment. Because they understand the lack of throttling/ storage problem.

Energy in the form of crude supplies was always fungible, and can go where it is wanted. This reality has been ignored by the “green” thinkers, because at the moment the BRICS and other nations are more “free market” than the sanctions-infected West, shooting itself in its collective foot. The return of coal plants in Germany and France proves that “green” was always mere corrupt corporatist politics.
