A new poll reveals the stark political divisions in the country over the striking down of Roe v. Wade — with about 77% of Democrats calling it a “step backward” and 64% of Republicans seeing it as a “step forward.”
Only 13% of Democrats said they consider Friday’s US Supreme Court ruling a “step forward,” as do 24% of independents, the CBS News survey released Sunday found. Roughly 20% of Republicans call it a “step backward” along with 55% of independents.
Overall, 52% of those polled see the court’s momentous decision as a “step backward,” 31% say it’s a “step forward,” and 17% say it’s neither.
About 59% of Americans disapprove of the decision, including 67% of women.
Forty-one percent approve, as do 33% of women.
The poll was taken Friday and Saturday after the court struck down [Roe v. Wade].
Republicans by 78% approved of the high court’s action, along with 38% of independents and 17% of Democrats, the poll shows.
Disapproving were 83% of Democrats, 22% of Republicans and 62% of independents.
Among the Americans who said they support overturning Roe v. Wade, 79% described feeling “hopeful,” 70% said they were “happy” and “relieved,” 51% chose “motivated,” 47% said “surprised” and 12% noted they were “scared.”
Among those who wanted Roe v. Wade upheld, 78% said they were “upset,” 72% described being “angry,” 62% said “scared,” 38% said “surprised,” 32% said they were “motivated” and 10% were “hopeful.”
Americans were evenly divided at 32% over whether abortion in their state should be legal in all cases or in most cases, while 27% said it should be illegal in most cases, and 9% said it should be illegal in all cases.

Roe v. Wade fabricated a constitutional right to abortion and was appropriately struck down. I do favor the Mississippi abortion law, which allows abortion only in the first 15 weeks, over the Missouri abortion law that bans abortions throughout pregnancy. The Republicans may lose power in states where they try to ban all abortions.
In blue states, I think a goal of conservatives should be to stop the funding of abortion by the state government, especially for out-of-state women, as California Democrats have proposed. Even some voters who support legal abortion may think that their tax money should not be used for this.
On one side, are the liberals. On the other, are the Americans.
If abortion was really that important to them, they’re going to have more to worry about than their constitutional rights pretty soon.
Very few people even know what the ruling actually held and its legal basis, thanks to the media, of course.
Even with the intense Dominant Media hype about the issue, It looks pretty close to a wash politically.
That is key. All across the morning shows, Democrats are lying about what the ruling means. All saying, abortions are illegal. Hardly a mention of state law, or the fact that the blue states wont change. Of course, the hosts of these shows, dont say a word either.
As l said in another post, the rats haven’t been this upset since the Republicans took their slaves away.
Amen...this poll is such BS, especially when you consider many don’t even understand what the ruling means...
Most people think overturning RvW is lol prisontime or death penalty for abortions nationwide.
I saw somewhere, substitute “pizza” for abortion.
SCOTUS just ruled that the constitution does not provide a right to pizza.
Doesn’t make pizza unavailable.
Granted and obvious that abortion is hotly contested, but it’s not in the constitution. The policy here is properly set by legislative bodies, not by judicial bodies.
reveals stark political divisions
Reason #4986 of why the country needs to just get it over with and split up....China China China...Probably not.

Anywho...the Left needs to find their places and live their lives as they wish. They need to leave the rest of us alone. Sadly, they can’t. They’re unable to survive without of us. For the most part, we’re the cops, fireman, mechanics, carpenters, plumbers and truck drivers. A short list of some of the jobs that make the world go ‘round.
They needed a poll to figure that out?
The use of “forward” and “backward” language completely and intentionally biases the poll. Even supporters of the decision might well agree that it takes us “backward” to the position of the Court prior to Roe.
“Amen...this poll is such BS,”
****
Obviously, because it’s from C BS. I dont know why Freepers STILL believe in polls.
Face it. America is no longer unified by a consensus of commonly held values. Washington warned against foreign entanglements. Lincoln noted that a house divided could not stand. Neo con globalists and baby killing liberals who control the media are destroying this country.
Amen to that.
I have always believed that polls were designed to MANIPULATE opinion.
I had the same thought. I would like to move “backward” to a time when marriage was understood to be a union of one man and one woman, and where a person’s sex was understood to be a biological reality.
“I do favor the Mississippi abortion law, which allows abortion only in the first 15 weeks, over the Missouri abortion law that bans abortions throughout pregnancy.”
And with that statement you have told me exactly who you are and what you’ll do.
Tell Mitt I said hi.
