A judge has dealt a blow to a couple fighting to keep a little white cross on display at their home in The Villages. Judge Michelle Morley has ruled in favor of Community Development District 8 in its protracted legal battle with Wayne and Bonnie Anderson of the Village of Tamarind Grove. She dismissed their most-recent counter complaint.
The Andersons had claimed that their display of the little white cross should be protected under the Florida Religious Freedom Restoration Act. However, CDD 8 has long held that the cross is considered a “lawn ornament” and therefore forbidden under deed compliance rules.

You sign an HOA agreement when you move into that place. These folks made a free choice when they moved in, are now breaking their contract, and are dealing with the consequences.
If you don't like rules, don't sign the contract.
We looked into the Villages; no way.
Such is the problem of owning a house where there is a homeowners association and its rules.
“If only I could afford to live in the country”
I have an estate in the country. It’s a 950 square foot (3/1) brick house on 1.25 acres. It cost me $55,000 about 4 years ago. It’s pretty tough coming up with that $400 payment every month, but I manage to squeak by.
How do HOAs start in an existing neighborhood? What if you vote against it, are you exempt?
Nice !
The $400 I could easily do but the other is impossible for me.
They had a brand new double wide trailer (I think double) for $50,000 in Kansas 🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️🌪️ but that was a bridge too far as well.
They probably still are. Don't equate the HOA with the general community.
I live in a condo development and the volunteers for the HOA are typically the busybody type and those most eager to write up enough rules to fill up a telephone book.
One of the rules in my community is that you may only hang a Christmas wreath on your door between December 17 and January 8th. A subsequent rule amended that rule to change "Christmas Wreath" to "Holiday Wreath."
Yes, the busybodies are at work and they love walking around the community with clipboards to record any infractions. This is what they live for. I was cited once for having a patio plant several inches too tall. I had to take my scissors and cut it down to size.
All in all thought, I like my community. The upside to my not being able to fly a Trump flag from my doorstep is that my neighbors are similarly not able to fly a Biden fag.
I can live with that. And when I retire, I would very likely end up moving to The Villages down in Florida.
“The rep on Colorado was that the people were fiercely independent.”
Sure, 40 years ago they were.
Yes they do. They start easing up on rules then the place goes to crap and might as well live in the ghetto.
Take down the cross and replace it with a Muslim crescent and see if anyone complains...
There are plenty of HOA authoritarians who vote Republican.
I would remove it from my lawn and to the front door or window.
So a multi colored flag, a BLM poster, a Muslim star would not be challeneged moon
