Türkiye boosts diplomatic efforts to establish food corridor

Türkiye has seemingly accelerated its diplomatic efforts for making a food corridor from Ukraine to the world markets possible under a plan crafted by the United Nations. While a military delegation is holding talks with their Russian counterparts in Moscow, Türkiye will host defense and foreign secretaries of the United Kingdom on June 23 in the Turkish capital.

With concerns over a food crisis, especially in the underdeveloped nations, are growing due to the blockage of the export of millions of tons of grains in the Ukrainian ports and silos, Türkiye and the U.N. reiterate their efforts for overcoming the crisis.

In this regard, according to sources, a Turkish military delegation went to Moscow on June 21 and held talks with their Russian counterparts on June 22. Sources stressed that talks which focused on efforts to resume the commercial maritime navigation from the Ukrainian ports were “constructive and positive.”

The parties have mutually developed an understanding for holding talks with the participation of Türkiye, Russia, Ukraine and the U.N. in the coming weeks. As a result of Turkish-Russian talks, a Turkish commercial vessel departed from the Mariupol port of Ukraine, which is now under Russian occupation.

What is “Türkiye”?

It’s a bit of a side point, but “Türkiye”? What’s next? Are we now supposed to also refer to Germany as Deutschland instead?

Side note: My grandparents immigrated from Hungary. From now on, please refer to Hungary as Magyarország instead. It’s only fair.

The country known as Turkey changed its name recently. Apparently this new name reflects an historic name for that country, from what I heard.

Is this like how Peking became Beijing a number of years ago?

I had heard that Beijing is much closer to how the name of that city is pronounced in Mandarin, than Peking was.

There will always be issues with translating place names into English from other languages.

We will still say “Paris” instead of “ParEE”

It probably won't make any difference. I once said "ParEE" to a French girl and she had absolutely no idea what I was saying. It's the letter "r," which has a unique pronunciation in French ... as Dave Barry puts it, it sounds like someone trying to dislodge a live eel from his esophagus.

As a French descendent, I get kinda mad that with the liberal press, it’s always “MayHEEcoh” and “Cheelay” and God help us, “Goo-ahdelaHARRRRRRAh!” but Paris, not “Puhree” and “Mo(n)chree-all,” not “Moh-ree-ahl.” And “Noo Awrleeens,” rather than “Oh(n)rleeoh(n)s” or, let’s face it, “Nahrlins.”

And for God’s sake, if I hear one more dirtbag, scum-sucking, communist reconquistador airhead say, “Loss Angheleez” I’m gonna beat them with a shovel.

I meant to write:

“Monchree-all,” not “Moh(n)-ree-ahl.”

From now on, please refer to Hungary as Magyarország instead. It’s only fair.

And let's refer to Jordan as Al-Mamlakah al-’Urdunniyyah Al-Hāshimiyyah and Egypt as Jumhūrīyat Miṣr al-ʻArabīyah.

For some reason, the British pronounce the final "e" in "Los Angeles" as in "easy." Sam Yorty, LA's last great mayor called the city that he governed "Los Angle-les."

Good try, but you’ve only got it half-right. The correct phrase is:
“Just the thought of Türkiye makes me Magyarország.”
