Automatic locking doors and law enforcement radios — things that were supposed to protect children from mass shootings — failed during the Uvalde school massacre, a top Texas official testified Tuesday.
The shooter, Salvador Rolando Ramos, essentially “walked straight through” the school’s west entrance because an exterior door could be locked only from the outside, McCraw said during his testimony. While law enforcement initially blamed a teacher for leaving the door open, McCraw said the teacher actually shut the door not knowing that it had not locked.
The door has a hex key, also known as an Allen key or Allen wrench, that disables its automatic lock mechanism, and in the case of Robb Elementary, “someone consciously had made a decision that it was OK to have that as a nonlocking door that day,” said state Sen. Charles Perry, who added that that style of door is used in a majority of schools across the state.
When asked what could possibly be the reason to have doors like that, McCraw seemed befuddled.
“I can’t explain it. It makes no sense at all,” he said

When all preventive measures fail, you can count on the poli . . no nevermind.
Still not buying it.
For instance, McCraw said, neither the exterior door nor the classroom doors could be locked from the inside that day, giving the gunman an easy pathway.
Doesn't everyone keep their houses like that? Who locks their doors when they go to bed? /s

Any student who wanted to slip in and out could get an Allen Wrench at the hardware store or out of his dad's toolbox. Or out of shop class.
If he doesn’t understand he doesn’t know teachers. That door was probably like that every day so they did not get locked out during recess. It’s stupid and lazy but it happens ALL. THE. TIME.

Clearly, all these multiple security failures are just proof that Americans have too many guns and they need to be taken away. /democrat
They had a drill 2 months earlier and did not identify this?
They did not know their radios did not work inside the school or that they had incorrect maps of the school layout?
That’s what happens when you have incompetent idiots running things. Sort of like the current Union government but with potential for vastly more dire consequences.
“”because an exterior door could be locked only from the outside””
I read and read and still don’t understand...Nothing in the article explained why - so a hex key was needed to lock or unlock the door - from inside or outside?
Failure Two: “Dysfunctional” classroom door
As the gunman made his way down the halls of the school, eventually choosing to enter classrooms 111 and 112, the classroom doors did not lock from the inside, McCraw said.
The doors were “dysfunctional” and “not secure” in that the locking mechanism did not work properly. It is unclear if that was by design or if it was a malfunction.
Most likely the Allen wrench is used to lock the crash bar down so the door won’t lock. It’s a stupid feature to even have on a security door but nearly all of them work that way.
“””because an exterior door could be locked only from the outside”””
If I recall correctly, Uvalde had had something like 48 school lockdowns during the past year because Uvalde is a hot spot for illegal aliens.
And now the school is admitting that their doors cannot be locked from the inside after 48 prior lockdowns.
SNAFU
“”I read and read and still don’t understand...Nothing in the article explained why - so a hex key was needed to lock or unlock the door - from inside or outside?””
These doors can be disabled with a hex key so that when it closes it does not lock.
The door should have been set so that when the door closed it is also locked.
The Santa Fe shooting was mentioned. As I understand it, and maybe this story changed, the shooter there was locked out of a side door and got the attention of student passing by the door who let him in thinking he was doing him (the shooter) a favor by letting him in because he was late for class. The door was locked from the outside but could be unlocked from the inside simply by pushing on a bar or turning a knob. Maybe doors other than the main entrance should only be able to be unlocked by a school employee using a key card or who knows a code for a key pad.
It’s rare I will go against officers but it appears in this case far too many people in charge and otherwise in that community dropped the ball in a big way. ......if the facts presented are as presented currently.
Everyone is missing the whole reason it got out of hand. School districts don’t want the public to know what happens behind those schoolhouse doors. That’s the whole reason they have their own police departments who answer to nobody other than the district board of trustees.
Security failures my arse....starting to think this WAS a set up...
According to one teacher interviewed on Fox, that door has always been only able to be locked from the outside.
Teachers going out that door for whatever reason could open it by the bar to leave, but in order to get back inside they would have to unlock the door with their key. TO RELOCK THE DOOR, they would have to reach around the outside of the door and turn the key and pull it out so that when the door swung shut it would be locked again.
My understanding was that the teacher in question was outside getting something from her car when she saw the shooter as he came around the building. As she ran back into the school, the shooter followed her. She had no time to relock the door as she was trying to make it back to her classroom.
A good thing to remember is the day of the shooting was just three days before summer break. All of the education for the year was really finished and they had just completed the state exams. During the morning they had an awards ceremony. So most of the classes were watching movies and doing fun stuff when the shooting started.
With so many “faults”, you have to wonder if this disaster was somehow planned???
