I learned how the military works when I was in Vietnam. If they send you cold weather gear then you are going to be sent to the tropics. Desert gear? Mountains!
Navy is the same way. "We're doing a BALTOPS deployment! Bring all the cold weather gear you have! Make sure you bring sweaters and jackets for port calls in Norway. It's gonna be chilly!"
And as soon as we leave Hampton Roads... "Plans changed. We're going back to the Gulf."
So true. My best friend got drafted in fall of 67. He was from Manhattan’s Eadt Side. His family , let alone him, didn’t have a car. What did the Army do? Trained him as a mechanic and assigned him to a Saigon motor pool.
