Companies brace for chaos as Xinjiang import ban starts in U.S.
Nikkei Asia ^

But trade and business groups said the new legislation's vague wording threatens to put the bulk of China's $500 billion in annual shipments bound for the U.S. at risk.

"The way the law is written could be interpreted as applying to other kinds of goods from other parts of China that allegedly involved forced labor at some point along the supply chain," Doug Barry, a senior director at the U.S.-China Business Council, told Nikkei Asia in an email.

There are reports of detainees being moved out of Xinjiang to work in other parts of the country, while components produced in the region have been traced to U.S.-bound exports shipped from elsewhere in China.

Barry warned that the law could heap more pressure on pandemic-hit supply chains and stoke U.S. inflation, already running at 40-year highs.

We’re headed for some kind of major breaking point.

Ironic that Biden is implementing the heart of Trump’s China policy by restricting Chinese imports.

LOL.

“So I should probably go to Costco and buy a ton of Ramen?…”

Chinese ramen comes in a tasty melamine flavor.

I do believe the powder keg is already in place, just waiting for some incident to light the fuse.

Good, cut off all commerce from China. They are not our friend, but are an enemy. We should not be funding them, nor depending on them.

Ultimately I suspect it will be the Chinese who will cut us off, not the other way around. Americans are too spoiled with low cost goods, just like companies love cheap Indian labor. Both need to end as neither China or India are our friend.

Well, to be fair it is an election year after all.

I get that uneasy feeling I had before 9/11. Biden team is lurching incoherently out of control, heedless of the fact that actions have consequences. It apparently never occurred to them that when they imposed sanctions on Russia, Russia would respond, and were unprepared for it when they did. Now they seem to think China, far stronger than Russia, will just stand there and take whatever insult is hurled at them.

Isn’t free trade grand? And to think back to Ross Perot and his warning to America back in the early 90s. Those warnings were laughed off by Bush #41 and his cadre of mind numbed political robots, on both sides. What dopes Americans are.

I agree. I’m feeling very uneasy about the elections in Nov. The Dems/Deep State know they will lose badly, and I now believe they are going to pull off a major event which will make it impossible to hold the elections. They will do whatever is necessary to hold their power and control. I hope I’m wrong.

Without cheap Chinese goods being imported, the living standards of the US middle class will decline precipitously.

So the US becomes a more normal country with a small upper class and a huge lower class.

Without a large middle class, democracy is finished.

Signed into law by President Joe Biden at the end of last year, the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act presumes that all U.S.-bound imports traced to Xinjiang, from cotton and tomatoes to floor tile and solar panel materials, were made using forced labor and brands them as "high priority" for seizure.

I can live without chinese t-shirts, floor tile, solar panels and definitely tomato or any other food products.

See, this one is actually sane. No need for slave driver goods. Now let’s see if we can do that with Tesla battery materials, if that’s not included already.

Unfortunately, OTOH, this ban is on top of hideous supply chain disruptions, massive inflation and soaring energy prices. We really should have a much sounder base upon which to make these decisions.

Yeah, but wait until they stop importing the top 100 prescribed drugs (including antibiotics), most of the equipment required to run American infrastructure, and 90% of goods Americans consume without us having the production capability...

Well, if it gets hard enough where you believe you must steal from or hunt your neighbors, be sure they are democrats first.
