Texas A&M fails to report $100 million in research funds from Russia and Qatar: report

Texas A&M has failed to report over $100 million in research funds it received from Russia and Qatar according to a report by The Wall Street Journal.

The unreported funds were used to pay for research at the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station, which focuses on engineering and technology research on cybersecurity, nuclear nonproliferation and artificial intelligence.

The report comes after the Department of Education found over $6.5 billion in unreported foreign gifts and grants in a report released in October 2020.

“The threat of improper foreign influence in higher education is real,” said then-Education Secretary Betsy DeVos in a statement following release of the report.

According to Section 117 of the Higher Education Act of 1965, institutes of higher education are required to report, twice per year, any foreign gifts in excess of $250,000. But the Education Department found that America’s “largest, wealthiest, and most sophisticated” schools had failed to account for billions in foreign investment.

Cut $100 million in state and federal aid. The University board covered up their finances that were used to calculate how much state and federal aid they received.

Of the $100 million, 3.2 were from Russia and the rest from Qatar.

Texas A&M is far from alone. If full audits were to be done of all foreign funding in American universities, very similar results would be found. In my opinion it represents a very large corruption problem, not just in Texas but elsewhere. Remember the Harvard professor who was found guilty of hiding Chinese funding?

Don’t just stop at A&M. Turn the whole damn crate over!

“Sure, because at nearly 40,000 dead Russians (on the low end!), and an inability to take Luhansk despite 115 days of non-stop warfare, Russia might finally get SUPER serious.”

Interesting that they don’t bother investigating why 30%* of their engineering professors were born in the People’s Republic of China.

*or whatever it is

There’s a distinct difference between $249,999 and $100 million.

Texas needs to establish a precedent. Indict, try, convict and sentence the high-ranking Texas A&M officials and professors involved to prison.

I can understand.

I lose that much in pocket change between the sofa cushions on a regular basis.

Indeed. This is just hit-prosecution/persecution for being a state Democrats want to turn blue.

After having been in that ‘game’ for upwards of 30 years at a similar institution, I’d say the Texas A&M EES lawyers probably already had some kind of ‘technical reporting criteria’ they met. Whether the funding was DIRECTLY from those foreign entities or via a ‘legitimate’ intermediary.
