Ukraine is closing the book on scores of Russian authors and turning a deaf ear to its foe’s music, too.
The Ukrainian parliament Sunday approved a law that stops the printing of books by Russian citizens unless they give up their Russian passport and become Ukraine citizens. The ban only applies to those authors who held Russian citizenship after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Sometimes it is necessary to destroy free speech in order to save it.

I don't have a direct line to the Kremlin, but when Zelensky signed a bill in January 2022 prohibiting public use of the Russian language in all of Ukraine, I think that was the final straw. That's when the Russians knew the Donetsk and Luhansk problems couldn't be resolved through political means.

Sounds like Ukraine wants to justify Putin’s military operation.

Looks like we choose the Mensheviks over the Bolsheviks.

How does one prevent the use of a certain language? Are there language police? Do the Ukrainians with Russian relatives have to communicate in code?

Ukraine is doing something that every European country should do: deport or force Russian citizens to return to Russia.

Let Russian citizens go to Russia if they don’t want to be Ukrainian.
Pretty simple really.

This is not new. Poroshenko tried the same thing and the Russian language could no longer be taught in school.
This all amounts to ethnic cleansing....and it's just plain wrong.

Normally yes. In fact this law is existing for a long time but mostly for business environment. If one hears a clerk in the shop speaking Russian or colleagues at work he is supposed to report to the police. Has been this way since 2014.

Agree, and easier still, Russia is coming to them, at least most of them.

And if you're Polish??...and if you're German?? and if you're British??
I'd say that it is likely that EVERY Ukraine has ties to Russia...either in friendships or heritage.

The Bolsheviks and later Stalin did similar under a policy of de-Ukrainiazation. I suppose it could be called childish if it hadn’t contributed to millions of deaths, and the current rivers of blood being shed in lands that seem to have an endless thirst for it.
