The Soviet Union broke up along national and ethnic lines.

Our states are so intermixed nationally, ethnically, politically, etc. that I don't really see any lines along which the US can cleanly break.

I imagine something like liberal "blue" city states surrounded by wild and open "red" country. Within the "red" country there may be outposts to protect specific resources such as mines, wells, farmland, etc.

It could end up being a long series of sieges.

I have a shorter version:
