Sweden and Finland most certainly were invited to join NATO, many times, they probably have a standing invitation that dates back to the Cold War.
Both countries sat it out against the Nazis too. Although Finland was somewhat justified.
Finland participated in the Second World War initially in a defensive war against the Soviet Union, followed by another battle against the Soviet Union acting in concert with Nazi Germany and then finally fighting alongside the Allies against Germany.

‘Pure stupidity’ was Pidor Putin sending nuclear armed warplanes into sovereign Swedish airspace (not just their ADIZ) thinking this gangster tactic would intimidate the Swedes and the Finns. Turned out it just pissed them off enough that they finally decided to join NATO.

This one act of penultimate arrogance not only put Finland and Sweden into NATO it has already resulted in NATO forces taking up positions on the barely defended Finland-Russia border. NATO forces are now just 160km from St. Petersburg and the only thing between them and a nice dinner at Restaurant Prospekt is the 220 troops of the 138th Mechanized Brigade who didn’t get sent to Ukraine.
That’s pretty much it. Pooty left the back door to Russia wide open.
Good thing NATO is there to keep an eye on it for him.
