President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on U.S. oil refiners to produce more gasoline and diesel, saying their profits have tripled during a time of war between Russia and Ukraine as Americans struggle with record high prices at the pump.
“The crunch that families are facing deserves immediate action,” Biden wrote in the draft of a letter to oil refiners obtained by The Associated Press. “Your companies need to work with my Administration to bring forward concrete, near-term solutions that address the crisis.”
As Biden sees it, refineries are capitalizing on the uncertainties caused by “a time of war.” His message that corporate greed is contributing to higher prices has been controversial among many economists, yet the claim may have some resonance with voters.
The letter says the administration is ready to “use all reasonable and appropriate Federal Government tools and emergency authorities to increase refinery capacity and output in the near term, and to ensure that every region of this country is appropriately supplied.” It notes that Biden has already released oil from the U.S. strategic reserve and increased ethanol blending standards, though neither action put a lasting downward pressure on prices.
Biden is asking each company to explain to Granholm any drop in refining capacity since 2020, when the pandemic began. He also wants the companies to provide “any concrete ideas that would address the immediate inventory, price, and refining capacity issues in the coming months -- including transportation measures to get refined product to market.”

Even though policies implemented “right now” won’t show fruit for a year or more, oil, as a commodity rises and falls in price based on the government’s attitude.
Show yourself a “friend to more production”, and prices fall (re: Trump) Show yourself an enemy to production and prices rise (re: Obama and Biden). It’s really pretty simple.
If biden was to come out with a “heartfelt” speech about being wrong about petrolium, and went full “Trump” on drilling, keystone, etc., the price of oil would collapse overnight. And the whole world would benefit.
Joe needs to get his act together first and stop sabotaging everything
Wouldn’t this be a good time for the major oil companies to publish the net profit for each gallon of gas sold and let the public know how obscene their profit margin is?
They wouldn’t be interested in doing that especially with 89, 91 and 93 octane where they are brazingly ripping people off.
Biden would have better personally luck flying to Mars. He broke it, there is now no quick fix.
25th Amendment, anyone?
“windfall profits” tax is a near certainty; and when that fails, as it inevitably will, nationalization will indeed appear on the horizon. If the November elections don’t bring a sea change, we are done for and not that far into the future.
Brandon got what he wanted, the destruction of refining capacity. Now he’s whining. This is the energy equivalent to the Leftists screaming to defund the police, then whine when the police quit and crime skyrockets.
Why take over of Nation’s private domain by government is named as nationalization? Its a transfer from what belongs to nation to government - It is complete opposite of nationalization. It is really governmentalization, not nationalization or privatization. Its de-nationalization. Left has so much corrupted the language to corrupt the discourse.
Not to mention that Biden. EOs reinstated a bunch of stifling regulatory hurdles for refinery operation and expansion. Made it doubly expensive and hard to get approval. I hope the oil companies remind his idiot
energy secretary of this.
The idiot thinks we cannot connect Bidens cancelling of pipe lines and his kow tow to his lefty colleagues over green energy policies....and now he is going to Marxicize the oil and gas industry?
Complete idiot.
REVERSE YOUR DOMESTIC ENERGY POLICY! ( sarc.)
More bricks, less straw — what an apt analogy!

I’m surprised that I haven’t seen the petroleum industry fight back on this green revolution. Do they have skin in the “renewables” game?

If the energy companies “fight back”, it provides the Leftist politicians an “enemy”. A better play is to fully comply with whatever lunacy the politicians come up with, until the country falls flat on its face. Then watch the politicians flail about looking for someone to blame. This is where we’re at.
Yeah they like to throw out that bs about all the leases that the oil companies aren’t taking advantage of but they very despicably fail to mention the required PERMITS needed that the government has made so difficult to obtain.
He did indeed. Tell the mumble-mouthed, flatulating, hair sniffing, pedophilic, bag of excrement, to go pound sand.
If I owned the refineries, this would be my response:
Dear President,
effective immediately we will ramp up refining of Diesel and Gasoline, to do this we will drastically reduce the refining of Jet Fuel, Effective immediately we will NO LONGER supply Jet Fuel for Privately Owned Aircraft. Only US Carrier Airlines will be allowed to purchase our Jet Fuel going forward
Thank You
I recall it was built on tribal land...all 400 acres of it
Including a rail head, roads, hospital and pipelines from oil and gas under the property....and jobs for the locals.
Who is John Galt?
Nothing personal, strictly business. If I can’t turn a profit, why bother?
And the oil refiners, placing the blame where it truly belongs, should tell Biden produce more oil, and we will produce more gas and less profits. The only thing Biden’s administration has been successful at is reducing US oil production by a full 20% on his way to destroying fossil fuels as he promised without any substitute energy to replace it.
Have to federalize in order to professionalize.
