The euphoria that accompanied Ukraine’s unforeseen early victories against bumbling Russian troops is fading as Moscow adapts its tactics, recovers its stride and asserts its overwhelming firepower against heavily outgunned Ukrainian forces.
Around 200 Ukrainian soldiers are now being killed every day, up from 100 late last month, an aide to President Volodymyr Zelensky told the BBC on Friday — meaning that as many as 1,000 Ukrainians are being taken out of the fight every day, including those who are injured.
But the odds against the Ukrainians are starting to look overwhelming, said Danylyuk, the government adviser.
“The Russians are using long-range artillery against us, often without any response, because we don’t have the means,” he said.
Ukraine has now almost completely run out of ammunition for the Soviet-era weapons systems that were the mainstay of its arsenal, and the Eastern European countries that maintained the same systems have run out of surplus supplies to donate, Danylyuk said.
Russia is firing as many as 50,000 artillery rounds a day into Ukrainian positions, and the Ukrainians can hit back with only around 5,000 to 6,000 rounds a day, he said. The United States has committed to deliver 220,000 rounds of ammunition — enough to match Russian firepower for around four days.
The majority of the American M777 howitzer artillery guns that U.S. officials said would enable Ukraine to match Russian firepower are now in use on the battlefield, according to the Pentagon. Yet the Russians continue to advance.
“I’d be shocked if the Russians are sustaining casualties anywhere close to what the Ukrainians are right now,” Alperovitch said.

You are digging your hole deeper.
As for the agreement about no NATO expansion to the east being part of the deal made to facilitate the break-up of the Soviet Union: https://multipolarista.com/2022/02/20/us-uk-france-russia-expand-nato-east-germany/
Of course the “fact checkers” and neocons and others who are now pushing war will deny this, but the documents are there. Ask yourself, do you think it likely that the USSR wouldn’t have agreed to let the captive nations go without some assurances?
Apart from that, from a realpolitik point of view George Kennan wrote about the folly of NATO moving east in 98, and Univ of Chicago’s John Mearsheimer has spoken about this at length at least since 2015. Bear in mind that these are just examples of those who have written and spoken about all of this. I realize it’s not common knowledge, but those are just the facts.
Here is Kennan, from the NYT, on the likely consequences of pushing NATO to the east: https://timesofgold.com/2022/03/01/george-kennan-1998-interview-on-nato-expansion/
Here is Mearsheimer giving a prescient academic lecture on the Ukraine crisis in 2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTyIxi49kAk
Here’s a more recent Mearsheimer piece (I’m sure he regrets his comments about the Russian military, but who knew how formidable it would be?):http://www.mearsheimer.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Why-the-Ukraine-Crisis-Is.pdf
I would remind you that we almost went to war over Soviet missiles in Cuba. Moreover, the Zimmerman Telegram, offering Mexico an alliance with Germany in 1917, was a main cause in leading the US to enter WW I.
I’m on the side of “Nationalist Ukraine killing Russian Orcs”.
Putin is not a “Mega Chad” fighting the globalists. He’s a Oligharch POS thug that believed his own generals BS.
We make weapons in the US. Damn good ones. Giving some to Ukraine will make them crack addicts for more that they will pay for, for the next 50 years.
I don’t care if 100,000 Russian Soldiers dies in the Dombas and Ukraine doesn’t care if 300,000 Ukrainian soldiers die if means a free Ukraine.
It may be heartless, but “F-them all and Cha-ching”.
War sucks, don’t do it.
You don’t understand what an agreement is.
Provide the agreement, who signed it, when it was signed.
There is/was no such agreement.
“Write this opinion on a piece of toilet paper and use appropriately. The world should run on facts, not feelings. Doing that is why we are in the position we are.”
Fact is Russians attacked.
Are you contesting that fact?
Putin and Xi want a Global Communist order, Weltoktober.
If you think the Russian invasion of Ukraine is over globalists or that anyone supporting Ukraine is a globalist, you’re an idiot.
Just wondering do you wake up in the morning, face Moscow and bow to your god in the Kremlin?
I don’t know how to break this to some of you “historical” idiots, but this is America and Russia is our enemy, as in, threatens to nuke us every week. And not just over Ukraine.
But being a Russian (I guess) you want to lecture us about every war in American history and how it justifies Russian invasions today.
When you get done with your comparative history class, splash some cold water, wake up and recite “I am an American”. It will do wonders for you.
And stop all the silly historical analysis that would easily have justified Japan and Germany attacking us in WW2. As another proPutin just did on here.
Once again, it’s America First, not Putin First.
Take the Zimmerman telegram and shove it.
Russia attacked Ukraine in 2022. Russia is an avowed enemy. Russian expansion in Europe is a threat to American interests today. In the real world, where you need to live.
Yes. Do some research, don’t take anyone’s opinion on this, there are lies all around. Stay with the facts.
I’m sure this tickles the PUtler fanboi’s pink, but I thought we weren’t supposed to believe anything the Washington Post says??? What happened??? As they grasp at straws to support their elation of Ukraine’s destruction they resort to quoting from our enemedia.
There is NO WAY this is true. Russia’s armament factories have largely shut down. This is verified by video evidence from inside Russia itself. Russians are secretly filming the emptying towns/cities of Russia as everything closes and posting it to YouTube and other outlets. They aren’t able to make all this supposed weaponry due to the lack of supplies and parts they depend upon from elsewhere. REMEMBER! Russia has NO technology industries or suppliers! They depend ENTIRELY on the West and Japan for electronics and precision made components. Russia WILL exhaust its supplies in time.
Pure nonsense from those who’d love to give PUtler BJ’s.
Calling them names will not stop the Russians. How about setting up fundraisers or organize groups to go and fight for Ukraine—they need cannon fodder. Get China to stop helping them.
Williams is Alexander Vindman.
“Calling them names will not stop the Russians.”
Stating murderers are murderers is not “calling names”.
“How about setting up fundraisers or organize groups to go and fight for Ukraine—they need cannon fodder.”
If I thought such were important I would be for US military action.
“Get China to stop helping them.”
China helping who? Ukraine? You’re quite delusional if you think that.
Since you are incapable of reasoning and critical thought, you ought live in an institution. You know nothing and are proud to base your judgments on you ignorance. I hope you are retired. I’d hate to think of you providing any sort of service or product.
You think all agreements are written documents? James Baker and others agreed in meetings that NATO would not move an “inch” eastward, and that oral agreement was recorded in the notes of the meetings. You do understand that oral agreements are enforceable in courts of law, don’t you? In this case, we gave our word and broke it. I hope no one EVER does a handshake deal with you. Apart from that, we have made things worse in Ukraine and bear responsibility for the 2014 and after atrocities by the Neo Nazis, as well as the coup. Knowledgeable people - Kennan and Mearsheimer, for example - warned what would happen to the Ukraine take NATO to the Russian border. Innocent people are dying because The West dishonored its word, conducted a coup, and have goaded a simpleton like Zelensky into destroying Ukraine and turning Neo-Nazis loose on the ethnic Russians and Russian speakers. You are living proof that it’s easier to fool someone than to convince him he’s been fooled. Maybe you can get a job in the Biden State Department. You have the lies down pat and refuse to think or learn. A perfect fit!
By the way, because of your contempt for learning, your lack of the slightest moral sense other than your feelings du jour, and your refusal to reason, I am recommending you for a position in the Biden State Department, along with some others here. You’d fit right in with the warmongers, liars, and imbeciles that staff the place.
You are an apologist for Russia. Your apologia is weak and does not hold up logically. But put that aside for now.
You are very invested in this. Why?
Oh screw off do you really think that blather means a thing.
And a great big nothing like you knows exactly what James Baker promised orally to Russia. What a joke.
Here’s your mantra: The West lied, the West and America are war mongers, the West sucks.
Meanwhile a demented thug Putin slaughters innocents and from your pea brain and traitorous mouth : crickets.
Since you despise this country and the west so much why don’t you get the hell out you loud mouth leftist America hater.
The NATO expansion agreement between low ranking diplomats was (a) made while the Soviet Union still existed, (b) was never formally ratified by either the Soviet Union or USA, (c) applied specifically to Germany and (d) assumed the Iron Curtain is in place.
The minute Russia, Ukraine and Belarus (and every country west/north of Belarus and Ukraine) were admitted into the UN as sovereign independent nation states, that NATO expansion statement was rendered defunct.
It was further invalidated by the transition of power between elected governments on both sides.
An agreement between the USA and the Soviet Union has no legal weight in a world without the Soviet Union.
Note,in 2022 Putin and the Duma have said:
1. Lithuania actually never left the Soviet Union properly (meaning what? Its current recognition at the UN is irrelevant?)
2. Ukraine, a charter member of the UN just like modern Russia, has no separate right to self-determination - its sovereignty is intrinsically artificial, and a delusion
3. Minsk is dead, therefore so is the Budapest Memorandum
4. The 17th century empire borders are still important today - and supersede the UN Charter recognition of sovereign nation states
5. No former Soviet Union vassal state should enjoy NATO membership - Rusdia insists on a rollback to the NATO borders of the early 1990s
What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If Russia no longer respects the international rule of law and isn’t bound by its own presidential signatures on binding treaties that relate to states it thinks are artificial...
Then NATO cannot be bound by an informal agreement between the real state called USA and a failed, defunct state called the USSR in its stipulation regarding artificially partitioned states (Deutschland Demokratisches Republik and Bundesrepublik Deutschland) that now exist as a single country called Germany.
