Senate negotiators reach framework deal on bipartisan gun package

WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.

The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.

“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”

Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.

A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

”The agreement also establishes a more rigorous background check process for people aged 18 to 21, …”

I predict that the upper age limit will quickly disappear and all adults will face consequences for misbehavior as a minor.

Some liberal heads will explode when they try to balance the need to protect people from the consequences of early transgressions against the need to deprive some people of their right to keep and bear arms.

The ex-post-facto issue will also be very entertaining. There will be people claiming that they never would have pled guilty if they knew additional punishment would be imposed years later.

Are we endowed by our creator with inalienable rights or not. You want the government to be the gatekeepers on our god given rights. Disgusting on FR of all places.

Serious cleanup needed on isle 1-20. Shall not be infringed is really easy to understand. You pick a BS concept to allow infringement.

”… but most of all a parent and fed up with mass shootings.”

You probably own guns at home at least in part to protect your children in case a criminal breaks into your home. Will you give up your guns when this new law is passed?

Or do you expect that the new law will prevent only a tiny fraction of the shootings that would otherwise occur? There are very few mass shootings at gun stores and police stations. Why do you think that is?

”Mental cases MUST be reported.”

Half of Congress believes that little boys should be able to decide to have their penises removed. If every nut case in the U.S. shot up a school the human race would become extinct.

But we need to remove mentally ill people from purchasing weapons.

That is the noble-sounding pretext. Let's look carefully at the implementation details and who enforces them.

The horrible truth is that we simply cannot trust the Democrats to enforce "Red Flag" laws for their nominal purpose. They want the citizens disarmed and will use every rational they can find to proceed with that program.

The other horrible truth is that we have a degenerated culture which encourages and rewards violent behavior from favored groups. It is an effective means of controlling a large population. Step out of line and a mob can be raised to assault you. You will not be permitted to defend yourself either.

By definition, every law affects the law abiding, and does NOT affect those who are not law abiding.

Dad bought me my first .22 lr rifle at age 12. As a WW2 Marine and NYPD cop he knew firearms he spent hours with me teaching me about shooting accurately and most of all SAFETY.

I passed those lessons down to my children

Don’t look for the NRA to do anything. Lapierre seems more worried about his cars/suits the last 15 years than anything to do with gun rights.

It amuses me when the left tries to act like that no-spine, do-nothing org is the puppetmaster of the government.

"Don’t look for the NRA to do anything."

Fortunately there are others, such as GOA.

Haven’t really seen them do any more than the NRA either.

What would really just make any sense at all is National Constitutional Carry.

At LEAST!
These morons seem to think that the word, "Compromise," means, "We give, they take and give nothing back."
"Compromise," is where BOTH sides give something.

Were I in charge, I'd be saying, "We get the repealing of the NFA, the GCA, the Hughes Amendment and national constitutional carry.

You get to stay out of prison for violations of USC 18 title 242.

We either have a second amendment, as well as any other constitutional right,

or we don't."

You are wrong. Try going into a neighborhood at 3 a.m. to hold a political rally that wakes up your neighbors. You’ll be arrested for disturbing the peace, even though all you were doing was engaging in speech (protected by the First Amendment).

I just wanted to confirm your opinion: You are okay with a 13-year old being able to purchase an automatic rifle on his own?
