Senate negotiators reach framework deal on bipartisan gun package

WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.

The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.

“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”

Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.

A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

That headline is misleading. I read the article looking for information on where to get the gun package, what’s included, what’s the price and is there a limit per day per customer. Oh boy, was I disappointed.

including “red flag” laws

Will there be imprisonment and heavy fines for private individuals or government employees who petition for the "red flags" in error or bad faith?

surely you dont mean we should have “NO LAWS” in regards to guns?

Between the lines: The core senators behind the deal, Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), are still working on writing legislative text, but are confident the deal will have the support of at least 60 senators — the threshold for legislation to pass in the Senate.

The AD’s made it filibuster proof and made sure Murkowski could hide.

I was surprised not to see her name on the list but she is up for re-election. I’m sure she’d vote Yay. Same with the one from Maine.

So, these new gun laws are only going to impact non-law-abiding citizens?

No, no, no. You don't understand. (/irony)

These new gun laws will make criminals out of all law-abiding citizens who have guns.

That is their purpose.

Government officials want the ordinary citizenry disarmed. Everything else ("Gun Safety laws") is a diversion and distraction to keep people quiet. The logical consistency of the details do not matter.

The goal is a society of obedient peasants who have no means to resist orders from the rulers.

We are well on the way to that utopian (dystopian?) state.

Between the red flag and domestic violence part, a whole bunch of crazy women will have a field day.

Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned.

“Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans”

Wit until the bill is passed to see if this is true.

No bans
No raising the age
No magazine limits
Funding for school security
Funding for mental health
Encourage states to enact Red Flag laws

It is not a bad agreement.

But watch Democrats sabotage it by inserting garbage into the bills.

California has had one for four years. There was a post here this morning about a study that showed they had no effect on gun violence.

NO laws. Period.

Why do you make inane arguments of 5 year olds buying guns? I can do the same thing. Dogs or people identify as dogs should not be able to buy guns. But I'm not a pussy. I am neither afraid of 5 year olds or dogs buying guns. When is all the evidence to be afraid of 5 year olds and dogs in using guns to kill people? Or buying guns? What part of shall not infringe don't you get? It's idiots like you that make nonsensical arguments that allow our freedoms and liberties to taken from government. It's idiots like you that keep giving an inch until we have no rights. First, it is 5 year olds not allowed to buy guns, then 6 year olds, and then 60 year olds.

Go vote for your eff'n POS RINO, Cornyn again. You are the problem.

It is a bad agreement because of the "Red Flag" laws. All it will take in the future is a stroke of the pen to incorporate your ESG score as a component of being able to purchase a gun or ammo.

And if you think that isn't the long game you're not paying attention.

The description of the law doesn’t seem that bad actually.

Some people seem to think that constitutional rights can’t be regulated, which is just incorrect. Every constitutional right is subject to reasonable regulation. For example, we have freedom of speech, but we’re not allowed to wake the neighbors up at 3 a.m. with our speech.
