WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.
The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.
“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”
Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.
A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

First Amendment law is incredibly more complex than that. Strict Scrutiny applies in some contexts (content based restrictions) but there are several categories of speech that are given lesser or no protection by the First Amendment and the court has recognized that governments may enact reasonable time, place, or manner restrictions on speech.

I think you are confusing regulation of guns and regulation of minors. Did our Founders believe that we needed federal laws to deprive minors from purchasing firearms?
When I was a kid I bought 22 ammunition from a corner grocery store. Today in Kalifornia I have to pass a background check to buy ammo. We live today in an era of extremely low expectations. This will not end well.
Nobody knows that because the details are not written. But the agreement calls for a judge to be required for a person to be red flagged.

“red flag” will be used by leftists to have the feds target conservatives. It’s the most dangerous item in legislation I’ve ever seen. No knocks raids in the middle of the night, initiated by a liberal neighbor, friend, family member, work adversary, ect. Full on police state.
This is beyond moronic. The ONLY reason the democrats aren’t moving forward the House AWB and magazine restrictions is because the Senate is 50-50 and Manchin and Sinema won’t kill the filibuster. If the Democrats had 51 votes and Senate control without Manchin and Sinema, you be turning your guns in right now. And no, your “I won’t comply” bluster wouldn’t change anything.
So instead of a ban, you are getting money for States to decide if they want to implement red flags or not (19 States already have these) and enhanced background checks on 18-21 year olds. Is that ideal? No. But it’s because of trailer trash dumbs and imbeciles with your mindset that we are here right now.

It’s not a federal red flag law. It’s money for States to implement them if they choose to do so. Start writing your State reps and tell them to turn down the money.

There are also distinctions involving “commercial speech”. Our Founders seemed uninterested in this distinction. Was there a distinction back then?
I appreciate the recent successful trend to so-called Constitutional Carry. We have proof that such does not lead to the predicted blood in the streets. How amazing would it be if the Supreme Court ruled all these permit schemes an infringement. I shouldn’t have to prove anything to my local sherrif in order to bear arms.

"Domestic Violence" is a useful pretext for confiscation. There are plenty of others in the new "laws".
In practice, we can be certain that anybody who owns guns and publicly criticizes the Government will be targeted for the "Red Flag" orders. The complainants are anonymous, and complaints can be filed by just about anyone. Appeals will be extremely expensive with very poor odds of success.
The "Karens" in your neighborhood will sign up in droves for the informant program.
