‘Top Gun: Maverick’: Tom Cruise Delivers the Goods
PJ Media ^ | 11 June 2022 | Ed Driscoll

Posted on 06/11/2022 3:04:54 PM PDT by Rummyfan

As arguably America’s last remaining movie superstar, it’s hard to call any Tom Cruise movie a “surprise” hit, but Top Gun: Maverick has had surprisingly powerful legs in its second week at the box office. But much like the way they turned out en masse for Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, American audiences are thrilled to finally see a military-themed movie that’s pro-America.

While it has its weaknesses, Top Gun: Maverick is superior to the original 1986 movie in many ways. I had never seen the original until last week, in order to get up to speed (pun intended) before watching the sequel on the big screen. Why didn’t I see it in the ‘80s? I think I was turned off by the MTV videos created to help sell it and the original middling reviews, such as this clip from Siskel & Ebert at the Movies...

Watching Top Gun on Netflix, I was reminded of its ‘80s production values; it plays like an extended MTV video, with erotic shots of F-14s that recall Dr. Strangelove’s opening credits, with a mating B-52 and tanker plane — but without the irony. The ‘80s music score, all Yamaha DX-7 synthesizers (then-the state of the art digital instrument), drum machines, and guitars through Scholz Rockmans also contribute to the Reagan-era feel. I didn’t care about the characters; the recent death of Ray Liotta reminded me that I cared far more about the gangsters and hit men of Goodfellas and Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction than daredevil American fighter pilots on the front lines of the Cold War because the writing and directing of the former movies were so good. The contrived Kelly McGillis subplot didn’t help matters....

Saw it Wednesday. It was very good not great. A little too heavy on the homages to the original, and even to Star Wars. But the flying sequences were extremely well done. Four stars.

No Kelly McGillis. But Jennifer Connelly looks great.

I’m not going to see it.

The same commie pedophiles who give us 99 pro-homo movies in a row, the same Weinstein/Epstein fiends, said, “Hey, those smelly Walmart people, those deplorable Bible-thumpers, they’re getting pretty riled up. I see a market. We can make a fortune and cool those conservative pro-Trump retards down by giving them a Super MAGA “Patriotic” Ra-Ra movie. They’re morons, they’ll go for it. We’ll make millions.”

No Kelly McGillis.

A true blessing.

Well it appears they made their millions already.

I actually never saw the original Top Gun. During 1986, I was busy getting married and starting a family.

I saw it last night. Suspension of disbelief is paramount, but this is the movies, after all.

If you want to be entertained, this is a great way to spend an evening.

How does this shit get posted here? Because it was on PJMedia? Does simply appearing on a .com website actually convince you that demands FRacebooking?

This site used to look down on this kind of crap, we used to punch down on pop culture.

It's just senseless, what has happened to this website while its founder lies suffering in a hospital bed.

I haven’t seen the movie and probably won’t until it plays on television.
One thing I have noticed during my short time on this earth though,
There is usually an actual war following behind these type of movies.

Not to rain on anyone’s parade, but I didn’t like the original and furthrmore—can’t stand Mr. Cruise the actor. Not since he disrespected Paul Newman in the Hustler remake....

I’ll pass on this one too...

But glad to see that there is a movie without homo-erotic overtones or trans propaganda...

Iran is never said nor referenced nor mentioned in the entire flick, but everyone understands that's who the target nation is.

How does this shit get posted here?

A few people still support the Anti-American deviates in Hollywood. These people could defecate on the American flag during the academy awards, and some people would still support and watch them.

Similar to NFL toadies.

Agreed. It’s a movie, an entertainment. Take it for what it is.

Money talks, even to hollywood liberals. A successful moneymaker like this will likely spawn several more pro-US military films.
