Seattle pays $500K to settle suit over man’s death

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle has paid $500,000 to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by the father of a 19-year-old man shot and killed after police abandoned a precinct in the city during racial justice protests in June 2020.

Horace Anderson and the estate of his late son, Horace Lorenzo Anderson, filed the complaint in King County Superior Court in November 2021, naming as defendants former Mayor Jenny Durkan, Councilmember Kshama Sawant and the city of Seattle.

The lawsuit alleged the city and those leaders encouraged participants in the so-called CHOP — Capitol Hill Occupied Protest — to break the law and “undermine the safety of others.”

The younger Anderson, who went by his middle name, Lorenzo, had graduated from an alternative youth-education program on June 19, 2020, and visited the CHOP zone the next day. He was fatally shot. A man has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the slaying.

The lawsuit alleged police were unable or unwilling to enter the CHOP zone to search for a suspect or conduct an investigation for hours after the shooting.

I’m sick of qualified immunity. Public officials who fail to do their jobs should be sued out of existence and jailed, if warranted... and it’s warranted here. This isn’t the responsibility of the city at large or taxpayers.

Who made the "abandon ship" decision here? Remember, holding the line at the police station would have probably been a good thing for law and order, but might have resulted in injury to the fire-bombing protestors.

Settled cheap. Consider lawyers got half of it.

The question is who ordered the police to stand down and abandon their post. As for the taxpayers or the city of Seattle at large they voted for the people who gave the stand down order and should suffer the consequences.

Stupid should hurt.

No one with a brain would go into the CHOP area. Period. Think of it as evolution in action.

I am pro-police, and never assume rogue cops until its proven otherwise - i.e. I give them the benefit of the doubt , but I know there are bad cops and bad police departments sometimes; near me, a local police dept had to settle a similar suit, and they were ‘likely’ in the wrong, the city paid the settlement, approx 500K, and then cut the police departments budget 500K - I like that way of dealing with the cost - tells cops, if you f-up, its coming out of your budget. Perhaps help them pay more attention to the bad ones.

Injury to fire-bombing protesters is a big problem? Seems to be more like instant justice to me. How about worrying about those who were injured or killed as a result of these protesters? The potential protesters should be notified beforehand that if they sustain any injuries or death as a result of their activities, that it is on their dime & they will not be found “not guilty” in case it goes to court..

Anderson, willingly, went there to “engage in the festivities”.
When you are engaged in criminal activity, the taxpayer shouldn’t be stuck with the bill, if you get offed or hurt.
That said, I have no sympathy for anyone involved.

Not going to Seattle, ever again.
It is a rat controlled city full of liberal losers and that coffee is crap. I wish them a constant ill wind.

Why does a woman that supposedly got an STD from a rental car’s seat get $5 million, and this poor guy only gets $500,000?
