Communism Still Haunts Russia
Wall Street Journal Opinion Page ^ | June 8, 2022 | Robert D. Kaplan

Posted on 06/09/2022 10:58:29 AM PDT by Wuli

Commentary magazine published one very important essay of the 20th century in November 1979: “Dictatorships and Double Standards” by Jeane J. Kirkpatrick [snip]... Right-wing authoritarian regimes, she explained, controlled only the levers of power and thus didn’t tamper with the “habitual rhythms” of traditional societies; nor were they bent on revolution. [snip]... Communist systems and ideology sought to remake societies, claiming “jurisdiction over the whole life” of their peoples, and therefore destroyed them [snip]... for decades to come.

[snip... no better example of this can be found than Russia, a superficially Europeanized society that sustained more than 70 years of communism. When the Soviet system finally collapsed in 1991, the result was [snip]... a decade of near-anarchy. [snip]... , Vladimir Putin’s tyranny followed organically.

[snip]... it is also true that Mr. Putin has been Soviet in his style of rule. He has amassed more personal power than any Russian since Joseph Stalin.

Many were naive [snip]... thinking communism was consigned to an irrecoverable past. The past three decades have proved to be a mere false start for Russia because the problems of communism are still with us. The Russian Revolution wasn’t preordained. It was a matter of many tenuous and contingent factors. Had Czar Nicholas II remained in power, Russia would likely have evolved into an imperfect constitutional monarchy, not the murderous monstrosity of the past 100 years. [snip]...

Nothing reveals Mr. Putin’s Soviet inheritance better than the structure and performance of the Russian army in the Ukraine war. [snip].... a Western army is built around its noncommissioned-officer corps: the various sergeants and corporals who impose pride and discipline on the troops. The Russian military [snip] sent into Ukraine had an NCO corps. That didn’t matter for the mercenaries and special-forces units that had fought Mr. Putin’s small wars.

Really? So far as I know Putin isn't sending the FSB into people's homes to get them to be good little communists.

However authoritarian Putin is, he is still authoritarian more than totalitarian.

Meanwhile in the supposedly free and democratic West we have vaccine mandates, CRT and LGBTQ++ propaganda aimed at children as young as Kindergarten, 5 and 10 year plans to save the planet or flatten the curve, etc.

Who are the real totalitarians now?

I understand that but the idea is that Russia is still hung up in its past Communism and we are supposed to be upset about it.

Who cares about Russia it seems to be a distraction from events here in the USA?

I saw some neocon say a while back that "Stalin was a sadistic simpleton", while the airhead was bashing Pootie.

One of the most dangerous apex predators ever was a "simpleton".

These are the kind of people that are opining about Russia.

It may haunt Russia, but it rules America.

What crap.

It never left. Still alive and well under an oligarch veneer and in more places, much more overt.

I’m much more worried about Communism haunting the US. My grandfather ran from Russian Communism in 1923...to a wonderful place of refuge and opportunity. It must be stamped out here, or the entire world will become a prison planet.

Empire building and warmongering abroad is sure sign of tyranny at home.

We have a one-party government and certainly a uniformly statist, woke ideology at the heart of Fed.gov in Washington DC. And the DOJ enforces it like the KGB.

As much as I liked Jeane J. Kirkpatrick, she was a Democrat, and after Reagan left office, and in the nineties, she fell back into the fold with the Clintons. This whole mess right now can be traced right back to Hillary F’ing Clinton and the little Nazis she surrounded herself with.

OMG, the Neocons will NEVER quit!

Imagine the 2022 U.S. military building a Christian cathedral! They would sooner build a temple to Moloch, designed in LGBTQ+ rainbow themes, dedicated to Harvey Milk. (Actually, the USN has named a warship for that homo-pederast rapist/abuser.)

That is still authoritarian rather than totalitarian. Poison was used by the Romans and probably the Pharaohs as well.

For a long time no one brought up Kirkpatrick's paper and the words authoritarian and totalitarian were being used interchangeably even though they have distinct meanings.

Now someone finally mentions it, but distorts the meaning much like when people refer to experimental jabs as "vaccines" or CRT/LGBTQ+ propaganda as "history lessons".

COMPARE AND CONTRAST:
Gee, just maybe this is why Russia is resisting the Globo Homo Empire? Where Ukraine joining NATO was the Russia-destroying battering ram?

Where Disney, Major League Baseball etc etc etc are all promoting “drag your kids to Trans-Homo-Pride??”

Just maybe ya think not everybody wants to turn their daughters into twerking sluts, and their boys into drag queen homos? Just maybe?
