The speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament made a vibrant plea Wednesday for his country to be named a candidate for European Union membership, a move that would bring the war-torn nation closer to the EU without guaranteeing its admittance.
Ruslan Stefanchuk, chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, told EU lawmakers that failing to give Ukraine a sign of an open door would be a clear signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that “he can be totally going forward without any punishment."
European heads of state and government are expected to consider Ukraine's bid for EU candidate status at the end of June. The European Parliament already passed a resolution in favor of making Ukraine a membership candidate.

There won’t be much of Ukraine left to join the EU, so I doubt Russia will care.
...but the EU will care, as what’s left of Ukraine will be a BASKET CASE financially, much the way East Germany was for West Germany, just after the Cold War.
Now why would they want to go and do a stupid thing like that?
But... Ukraine is in shambles. Damaged infrastructure, internal instability, the threat of war, millions of people displaced, many of the economic money makers shut down or at reduced capacity, thousands dead, the loss of near 20% of it's population and landmass, the loss of a major port city, the loss of one of their major industrial areas...
Surely we will spin it as a victory, we always do.
The EU won't want that place.
Sometimes, we just do not see what we have, or greed pushes us to take risks we shouldn’t. Greed sometimes makes us reach for more and more, even if prudent risk and ROI calculations should tell us to stop.
In the end, there is no huge loss for the US or EU. The only real loser in this equation is Ukraine. I wonder how long it takes for that concept to soak in for the average Ukrainian?
The US was willing to gamble (((BIG))). It was after all, not our land, not our people, and even most of that money we were giving them came right back to us in the form of defense spending (Ukraine buying weapons), armored vehicles, body armor, communications equipment, even mercenaries...
This is a classic case where when you have a Machavellian style politician like Biden, decisions are made that are immoral, just wrong. It's one thing to be strong on defense, like Reagan and Trump were. It's an entirely different story when you gamble with millions of peoples lives and it's purely based on economic interests, these people actually have it pretty well right now, and the “enemy” has a legitimate argument may that be us violating agreements or the security risks posed to them if Ukraine is in NATO.
***Sadly, the real culprit here is Biden, and he will come away from this unscathed.*** Not even Mr. Z is to blame really, because he does as he's told.
Ukraine cannot demand of force their way into NATO. We have to bless that off and that is what we did in October 2021.
Putin will be at fault, so Biden and his MSM will claim. Even though it was us that pushed the Russians into a corner with Ukraine NATO membership, an intolerable security situation for Russia which is obvious and can be explained in further detail in another post if interested.
It was simply a big gamble. We lied and had been in violation of the Minsk Memoranda for years, arming whacko’s in Eastern Ukraine. The Russians knew this, we were bragging about it in our news media (we wanted them to know). The idea being, if Russia decides to take action, they would have to pay a very high price and if they don't physically stop us, we win.
However, if Russia decides to go in, Ukraine would be on the losing side, in every manner. For us even if Russia does invade, the depletion of their armed forces and them getting tangled up in Ukraine is still to our advantage in a global context (weakens their position).
(This story right here was us causing an unnecessary war and it mostly flew under the radar in the US):

And in the end, what will Ukraine have gotten for the price it paid? NATO membership? Nope. EU membership? Nope.
And it was (((ALL))) predictable!
