There is a serious problem with the homogenized nature of cybersecurity professionals, Trellix CEO Bryan Palma said during his keynote at the RSA Conference.
An overwhelming majority of individuals in the cybersecurity field identify as straight, white, and male, according to a recent Trellix-commissioned survey conducted by a market research firm.
This clear lack of diversity is holding the industry back in two main ways. “First, we are turning away great people and doing our industry a significant disservice by failing to cultivate a more inclusive environment,” Palma explained. “We are all better when we benefit from the diverse perspectives of others.”
And secondly, that homogenization is bad for business. “I learned this decades ago from Indra Nooyi, the former PepsiCo CEO: we do not look like our customers. And our lack of diversity restricts our ingenuity, innovation, and ability to recruit the next generation of talent,” Palma said.
“Hell, the hackers are more diverse than we are. Even they understand the importance of having a bigger tent,” he added.

However, if you have a degree in transgenderism with a minor in fisting, experience in DEI, and call anyone who wont hire you as a cyber security professional a bigot, companies may not have a spot on their roster for you.
Does this guy really believe this crap or is he just doing some ‘pride month’ pandering to get his company good PR? If he’s serious, what’s he going to do, ask interviewees their sexual preferences or how they self-identify? Set quotas? Wouldn’t that break some kind of anti-discrimination law? And how in the hell does he know that queers of all orientations and genders are being ‘turned away’ every day because of discrimination?
I’ve never heard anything like this. CEO’s don’t get to be CEO’s by making such nonsensical talk. I sure as hell don’t look forward to hearing this crap all month long every June.
I guess he has a hard time with the fact that cyber security is an actual thing. That some people, the cyber security guys, take seriously. Of course, that passion to do the job doesn’t carry over to the CEOs and CFOs, ie Colonial Pipeline, who could care less untold it’s too late
The folks in cyber security do real sh*t. All the liberal hipsters write code to figure out the next credit card processing app, the next social media platform, or discount hotel app so they can try and sell it and retire. Then become Instagram influencers.
