arly this month China’s president Xi Jinping encouraged the country’s youth to establish “great ideals” and incorporate their personal goals into the “bigger picture” of the Chinese nation and people. “‘China’s hope lies in youth,” he said in a major speech.
But on China’s internet, some young people say their “ideals” simply cannot be achieved and many of them have given up on trying. Frustrated by the mounting uncertainties and lack of economic opportunities, they are resorting to a new buzzword – bai lan (摆烂, or let it rot in English) – to capture their attitude towards life.
The phrase, bai lan, which has its origin in NBA games, means a voluntary retreat from pursuing certain goals because one realises they are simply too difficult to achieve. In American basketball, it often refers to a player’s deliberate loss of a game in order to get a better draft pick.
On Weibo, the bai lan-related topics have generated hundreds of millions of reads and discussions since March. Netizens also created different variations of the bai lan attitude. “Properties in Shanghai too expensive? Fine, I’ll just rent all my life, as I can’t afford it if I only earn a monthly salary anyway,” one grumbled.

You will own nothing and you will be happy. Works for China, won’t work for US.

Xi sounds a lot like Mao.
Bai lan in China.
Our youth should let Bai-Den do the same here.
I’d like to see Klaus Schwab live by his own edict. None of the Davis crowd lives by it.
...I meant ‘Davos.’
According to the article, it probably won’t work much longer for China.
China has disaffected youth, who are not enamored of the joys of China’s blend of communism and crony capitalism and lack of personal freedom????
Layer on that the knowledge that millions of their countrymen were starved to death under the same government.
They should call it Kimchi.
An aging society will do that to civilization. What is the point of working for somebody’s pension that you will not receive?
Well those who run China better strap on their Thinking Caps and find some methods that will give their youth a reason to keep working at trying for a good life.
For many, falling into dark hopelessness quickly turns into
acting out this frustration and anger in very destructive ways. I’m not saying all of them will become violent, but a fair number may.
Maybe China will see a good use for a national religion, but no, they are Communists before any thing, before any deity.
“Layer on that the knowledge that millions of their countrymen were starved to death under the same government.”
Young people in China don’t know that.
I guess violent anarchy IS the way of the future.
The youth can only tolerate anomie, unequal application of justice, and nihilism for so long before they decide to lash out.
Good thing I like to read about Medieval history. My local warlord primacy is already mapped out.
And I live in northern Virginia!
Their version for "going Galt".
“I’d like to see Klaus Schwab live by his own edict. None of the Davis crowd lives by it.”
They are getting saline injections. They are dodging the vaxxxxxxes and boosters.
Worse. The One Child policy backfired massively and since nobody seems interested in giving China a short high intensity war into which they can feed their excess population, they have several dozen million men of military age that will never be able to get girlfriends let alone wives.
This is starting to sink in at their Politburo - they knew it academically, and war was going to be how they solved it (they may still be trying to) but it’s not going to be enough - and it’s starting to show. What point family loyalty and hard work to benefit the family if you can never have a family of your own because there literally are not enough women?
As for the women, they’ve got their own problems. Because of the huge numbers disparity, younger women will forever be pursued and propositioned, among other things. They fear they will be made to become broodmares to address the population imbalance.
Of course. It is rumored that Mao was a bit of, shall we say, a ladies man, so they might be related. 😂😆
