The news here is that the Russian superyacht "Amadea" had fled to Fiji to avoid sanctions and Fiji has consented to the seizure and forfeiture of the ship to United States authorities. Amadea becomes the first Russian superyacht to fly a US flag.

About the superyacht Amadea:

Amadea is a motor yacht with a length of 106.1m. The yacht's builder is Lürssen from Germany who delivered superyacht Amadea in 2017. The superyacht has a beam of 18.0m, a draft of 4.1m and a volume of 4,402 GT.

The Amadea features exterior design by Espen Øino International, while her interior was penned by Zuretti Interior Design, with naval architecture by Lürssen Yachts. Up to 16 guests are accommodated on board the superyacht Amadea , and she also has accommodation for 36 crew members including the captain of Amadea. The yacht Amadea has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. She is powered by 2 MTU engines, which give her a cruising speed of 13.0 kn and a top speed of 20.0 kn. The yacht has a range of 13.0/8000 n/m nautical miles at a speed of 13.0 kn. The yacht carries 392,000 liters of fuel on board, and 77,000 liters of water.

On the ranking of the largest yachts in the world, Amadea superyacht is listed as number 63rd. She is the 22nd-largest yacht built by Lürssen. Refit market data from SYT iQ show that the yacht was last refitted in 2021.

It currently (June 6, 2022) costs ~US$564,088.00 to fill the Amadea's bunkers with fuel. The average Russian earns about US$6,500 per year.

The most recent valuation of the ship is US$350,000,000.00

The owner of the ship WAS Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov. Kerimov is friends with both Vladimir Putin and the Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov.

Torpedo it. A man is free to dispose of his own property as he sees fit. Russia has subs. Who could complain?

We should seize all Iraqi oil as our own, and invade Venezuela and take theirs as well. Do the same for Cuba.

I am not impressed. The US should not let our flag fly on a stolen yacht.

Seize it on the high seas, and hang the prize crew as pirates.

Video it, and send it to Short Bus and his puppeteers.

Wrong, the American people will get the bill to rebuild Ukraine, just like we always get the bill.

As much as I dislike thug Putin, why is it ok to steal property from (yes corrupt) private Russian citizens?
What stops any nation from doing that to us?
If we travel to Turkey for example, what stops then from legally stealing anything they want from one of us?

Really bad idea. This property is impossible to sell. Who in their right mind would buy the stolen yacht of a Chechen warlord?

The president need a super cool yacht—Dock it in the Potomac for use of the US President, USN #1 —Only put guns all over it and anti rocket systems. Make it a gunboat as well as a pleasure barge.

Russia should thank the US. This helps deter Russia’s oligarch class from capital flight. What’s been going on, for decades, is that these guys were exporting investment capital to the “West”, mainly, causing massive underinvestment in Russia, relative to its earnings from resource exports. Malinvestment is a major reason for zero or low rate of economic development. Its been variously estimated that around half of Russia’s national wealth is held abroad, almost all in the “West”. Which is unique in the world, save for a couple of Arab oil producers.

A Latin American tycoon? An Arab tycoon?
Why not? If it looks good it is good.

I am saddened that so many neocons are still around, and some landed here at our beloved FR :-/

This will all end poorly with Putin announcing victory in Ukraine... he will be commenting on the obvious....

And millions will die of starvation, another neocon Mission Accomplished moment.

The fellow is not actually a private citizen, or that the wealth’s origin is government sanctioned is one argument.

The same argument has been used in cases re recovering wealth from the Marcos families’ cronies. They claim they are private citizens, the prosecution claims that the wealth derives from officially sanctioned corruption.

The boat was seized by the US government. Confiscated. It is the property of the US government. The flag registration papers will list the US government as owner.

I wonder when it will be on one of the Fed surplus equipment auction websites? Or will the feds just use it as the presidential yacht?
