These bases were named after Confederates, now titles may be ditched. Here's what vets say

As a young military service member, Richard Kingsberry said he wasn’t aware that two of the bases where he served had been named after Confederate leaders Braxton Bragg and Robert E. Lee.

That realization would happen later, but it helped sparked him to join the effort to see names on military boats, installations and other places removed, saying that they sent the wrong message about the nation’s history and ideals.

The effort to remove the namesakes of those who aligned themselves with the Confederacy hit a critical step as the Naming Commission recently put forth several names to replace military installations such as Fort Lee and Bragg that are named in honor of Confederate leaders.

In its place, installations may be named after women, people of African and Latino descent and other national leaders such as Dwight D. Eisenhower, a former president and general.

“I think it is the appropriate thing to do to rename these military bases that are named after Confederate individuals,” said Kingsberry, commander of the National Association for Black Veterans.

He added: “That's an honor that we don't believe that they should be bestowed upon them because of their actions in going against this country, and their actions to support the institution of slavery.”

These dumbasses don’t realize the base naming in the south was largely about NATIONAL RECONCILIATION.

They know that - they're trying to revoke that.

Yes, and unquestionably, General Sherman was guilty of an endless series of war crimes

Bragg will be an especially painful one to lose to wokism. It’s so ingrained in TX history.

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III said the proposed name changes at the installations “reflect the courage, values, sacrifices, and diversity of our military men and women.”

I know what you mean. I spent most of my childhood at Fort Bragg. It will always be Fort Bragg.

I’d like to see Fort Nidal Hassan! Now *there’s* a guy who knows how to speak truth to power! And we can have Fort Bradley Manning and Fort Bo Bergdahl too!

We don't have the money to rename bases. The military should not be focused on all this PC and woke bullschiff. Every dollar they spend, every minute they spend on this crap are dollars and minutes not spent on training to kill and break things. All the renaming will cause confusion and poor communications. This is just another attempt to rewrite American history. Exactly how did America survive all these years without any problems with the current names in place?

This is coming from the government that wants a Department of Misinformation. By the way, it is just on hold while they wait to change its name to fool gullible people. The parallels to Orwell's 1984 are striking. I don't want to spend a dime on this government other than to shutter everything that ruins America.

I don’t get why anyone would have wanted to be reminded of Bragg. There are other Confederate generals.

When are they going to change politicians names? Jackson Lee must be as embarrassed as hell with the handle she has?

I think that the UNINFORMED population ‘thinks’ that these bases were name by the US Army with those names and, as is with the statues and the rest of what the LEFT wants us to forget down the memory hole, there is a considerable history that is ignored. Remember, the LEFT is, as is shown in this past decade, completely unwilling to put their REVISIONIST efforts up to a popular vote. Ever wonder why?

Camps Jackson, Bragg & Benning came from WW1 with the incredible need for large spaces for the AEF needed for that war. Polk, Hill & Hood came from the same needs in WW2. The names were indigenous to their localities, chose from names suggested by those states. Let us at least remember that NONE WERE NAMED AS/FOR any racist or segregation purpose. [Note: Fort Jackson (SC) is not being renamed (yet) as President Andrew Jackson, while a slave owner, predated the US Civil War AND even quashed an early succession attempt by South Carolina in the ‘Nullification Crisis’.]

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION.

Bingo. The deal went something like this:

North: WE WON!!! But we're not going to be dicks about it. Much.

South: OK. But we're still gonna be SOUTHERN.

That worked pretty well until a bunch of perpetually offended professional victims with very dark skin started whining and crying.

Away with those foul folk.

Not true for me. When I served at Ft. Leonard Wood, I had no idea who Leonard Wood was or why the fort was named for him. When I served at Ft. Jackson with an engineering attachment from Ft. Bragg, I did not know whether Ft. Jackson was named for Andrew, Stonewall, or some other Jackson. I did not know why Ft. Bragg got its name nor could I have cared less. Same for other forts whose names I knew, Polk, Campbell, Benning, etc. I did have an idea why Ft. Benjamin Harrison got its name, but again, I could not have cared less. I did care that they got my measly pay right.

Are we also going to abolish the Robert E. Lee Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery?

https://www.nps.gov/arho/index.htm

The Robert E. Lee Memorial

Arlington House is the nation’s memorial to Robert E. Lee. It honors him for specific reasons, including his role in promoting peace and reunion after the Civil War. In a larger sense it exists as a place of study and contemplation of the meaning of some of the most difficult aspects of American history: military service; sacrifice; citizenship; duty; loyalty; slavery and freedom.
