A House Democrat plans to introduce a bill that would hit AR-15s with a 1,000% tax — and it could pass Congress without GOP votes

The recent string of high-profile shootings in the US is prompting one House Democrat to draft a measure designed to severely restrict access to the AR-15-style weapons used by gunmen in the carnage. Rep. Don Beyer of Virginia, a member of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, wants to impose a 1,000% excise tax on such semiautomatic rifles.

"What it's intended to do is provide another creative pathway to actually make some sensible gun control happen," Beyer told Insider. "We think that a 1,000% fee on assault weapons is just the kind of restrictive measure that creates enough fiscal impact to qualify for reconciliation."

When they say sensible, think nonsensical. For common sense, it’s common stench.

Beyer’s plan is to pass the bill through reconciliation, which would allow it to bypass the 60-vote threshold for breaking the filibuster. Because it is a tax proposal, it could meet the requirement for reconciliation, experts said.

And since it’s a tax, the Supreme Court would uphold it.

They are taking a lesson from the LGBT play book, do it incrementally so people do not yell as loud. Recall in the 1970s they just wanted privacy in their bedroom. Now we have the US Federal Govt forcing elementary schools to allow kids to go into any bathroom or lose funding. It will never end.

How about no parole and no negotiated reduction of sentences for crimes committed with a firearm?

That seems like commonsense legislation. For a start.

What if they made a law where all firearms of any kind had to be pink? And changed nothing else. I think that would have a effect…. I like it.

.gov can’t keep drugs, children, people, ANYTHING from coming across the border. Mexican drug cartels will fill the void. Hell you can probably get an M203 with 40mm HEDP rounds on the cheap.

Good! Let it happen! I WILL NOT pass in the Senate BUT IT will raise resistance to the rodents’ plans to take away 2A rights. It will be another log on the fire.

Confiscatory taxation.

That didn’t work out too well for Mr. Lincoln. Or the nation.

What part of the phrase “shall not be abridged” do these people not understand?

The English language has not evolved THAT much since the late 18th Century.

Abridge - curtail (a right or privilege).

Taxation of any kind is curtailment.

“Someone needs to introduce a tax for Congressmorons to pay for UNCONSTITUTIONAL LAWS! 2,000,000% tax for each page of the bill...”

And this is yet another reason why one and done term limits are something the citizens of this country need to get on the national ballot. It’s obvious the executive and legislative branches of government have a conflict of interest that will not be resolved by congress. It’s up to us to fix this issue.
