COVID-19 cases have risen in the U.S. to around 100,000 per day, and the real number could be as much as five times that, given many go unreported.
But the situation is far different from the early months of the pandemic. There are now vaccines and booster shots, and new treatments that dramatically cut the risk of the virus. So how much do cases alone still matter?
That question has prompted debate among experts, even as much of America goes on with their lives, despite the recent surge in cases.

The NERVE of "much of America" to ignore this public health crisis and catastrophe! I'll bet that "much of America" isn't even wearing masks or hunkered down in their homes anymore or standing 20 feet away from other people. They obviously don't care about the health of other people.

It only really matters to the people with several comorbidities who jight not survive it. The cdc stated that the vast majority of people, thatched from covid 19, the original virus, had 4 comorbities or more
Our nation went about it the wrong way. They locked everyone down instead,of just protecting those who were most vulnerable to the virus. The vast majority of people had a more than 99% survival rate and didn’t need to be lo ked down or protected. While some hea,thy people would have died, that is a fsct with all flues practically, and we don’t kock,the nation down over regular flu- at least we never used to. During flu season, we take measures to try to help the most vulnerable, but we certainly don’t lock,the entire nation down and cause businesses to go under as a result
It doesn’t matter anymore other than feeding my FOMO. I’ve repeatedly failed in my attempts to exposed myself and catch a “case” with its attendant degree of natural immunity.
My lovely wife tries to placate me by saying maybe I’ve actually had it and simply didn’t know. But I’m too cheap to spring for a titer test to check for that.

It is all the nonsense surrounding it that is destroying our country, and it makes me damned angry.
The population is vaccinated and we have pavloxid to treat the virus once you get it. Omicron is less deadly than delta although it is much more contagious and time will tell if the virus will continues to mutate in that it well be less virulent.

Same observation here. The cases are mostly causing misery for a week (flu-like, bad head cold, some gastro issues), but people are coming through just fine, including some that are already ill with serious co-morbidities.
What is really interesting is the attitudes of those vaxed & mostly boosted, some on shot #4 who do get sick/COVID. They are pissed off .... many locked themselves down (or their kids insisted they stay home) until they could get all the shots/boosters. Once they were shot up to the max, they felt “safe” to go out again ... some still wore masks. Then they got COVID anyway .... not happy campers ... “WHY did I even get vaxed?” is the most common complaint I hear. If they get adverse effects, they’re going to be more than upset ... I think some already are getting adverse effects, but they haven’t connected the dots yet. It’s interesting to watch what is going on psychologically with these folks .... sad, too.
They’re still lying it’s the vaccines. No, it’s now mutated into a cold and natural immunity has a lot to do with it.
The flu never got as much attenion as media “celebrity” CV19 is getting imo. If you got the flu you just took a few days to stay home to shake it off, but maybe not if you live from paycheck to paycheck.
Case counts have never been useful for finding effective measures. They don’t matter.
Deaths matter. The curve has ended its decline over the last few weeks. The level where it has flattened is slightly above the minimum of last summer. You must go back two weeks to get a proper measurement because some states are delaying death reporting. Two weeks ago there appeared to be a small uptick.
That’s likely too early. Australia and New Zealand’s death count is pretty steep right now as they approach winter. It will serve as a reservoir for the northern hemisphere’s upcoming winter.
And make no mistake in this, if the US election were scheduled in July, the death curve would still get ugly in Oct/Nov. The virus doesn’t care about US midterms, as evidenced by how many it kills all over the world.
