DeSantis beats Trump in 2024 straw poll a second time at Colorado conservative summit

Gov. Ron DeSantis once again swept a straw poll for 2024 presidential candidates at a Colorado conservative conference Saturday, beating out former former President Donald Trump and other possible contenders.

The attendees of the Western Conservative Summit, organized by the Centennial Institute, a think tank associated with Colorado Christian University, approved of a potential DeSantis candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination at 71%, with Trump coming in at 67%.

The straw poll was conducted based on an "approval" system, which allowed attendees to vote for more than one candidate that they could support.

DeSantis won the 2024 straw poll last year at the Western Conservative Summit, narrowly edging out Trump. DeSantis received 74% approval to Trump's 71% in 2021.

Straw polls at party conferences are useless.

I could go with DeSantis. Or Cotton, if necessary.

Can’t allow the usual suspects to divide the party going into 2024. Like it or not Trump is the shot caller this time around.

If I were Trump I would throw my weight behind Desantis and enjoy the good life. If not, I am still with Trump.

While I certainly love Trump, he has two big negatives going for him that makes me prefer DeSantis:

1. The age problem. Trump is 75 and if reelected in 2024 he would be 78. As we have seen with Biden, electing someone pushing 80 doesn't work out too well. DeSantis on the other hand, is a very young 43.

2. The "lame duck" problem, if Trump won in 2024 he could only serve a single term, removing a lot of leverage he might have with Congress, where somebody like DeSantis would be eligible for two full terms.

I will stick with ‘The Donald’
He has done all the heavy lifting.
We know he is the real deal

DeSantis/Paul 2024

Hate to break it to you but there AIN’T NOBODY gonna pick Rand Paul as their running mate.

And I say this as a Rand Paul supporter myself.

I'd add a third. Trump's Achilles is his personnel instincts. They're a virtual dumpster fire. Sessions, the Mooch, Bolton, Tillersn, Mattis, Giuliani, McCabe, Nikki Haley, Sally Yates, Flynn, Hope Hicks, Reince Priebus, Rod Rosenstein. Oh, and Pence. And now Kevin McCarthy.

Another Trump negative: We all saw how the Deep State and the media (including the poisonous “social” media) went after Trump hammer and tongs. If he were to run again and win, you can be sure they would go after him again, redoubling their efforts, no holds barred. It’s not clear that our badly divided nation could survive a second Trump presidency.

I’ll stick with Trump as long as he’s in the race.

If I switched, I’d feel like woke had won.

Cotton is even more charismically challenged than DeSantis, he always looks like he’s about to throw up. But, yeah, I’d take him if there was a snowball’s chance.

The Democrats and the DOJ have charged Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro with crimes, their cases will likely drag on for the rest of the year, just like the 1/6 people still in jail.

The purpose of the 1/6 committee is to prevent Trump from running again, I think they will indict him on some made up charge that would prevent him from running.

They are desperate to stop him from running, indictment is one way to do that.

Colorado Christian College sponsored it.

Kamikaze Christians? Trying to start a civil war here?

The Colorado GOP hates Trump and did everything they could to keep him off the Colorado ballot.

The Colorado GOP is NOT conservative nor pro-American. They are Associate Democrats at best.

Yes. That’s his weakness. He’s smart though. He might make a good VP.

You make good points. Although I like DeSantis and his fearless drive to do the right things, my concern with him is he lacks the likeability factor that is so necessary to win a national election. He’s not affable enough in my opinion. People like candidates who they feel comfortable with and can relate to. DeSantis comes across a little stiff and that can be a tough image to overcome.

Again, I would vote for him but I place principles and accomplishments way above affability and smiles.

I think Paul is a great choice. You have to pick someone who will make your political opponents less likely to try to take you out.
