Perhaps there were in communication with the plane via radio. Seems to me that an AH-1 Cobra flying CAP would have been more effective, then and now.

I'm pretty sure they were in communication with the small plane, probably on the guard frequency initially. They made the plane land on Merritt Island. The Cobra probably would provide better CAP, but helicopters are awfully noisy.

Well only “assault planes” which are planes that we can have a vague definition for. At first of course, we will get to other planes later. Of course only planes that the regular citizen might fly in...the “public servant “ class still needs planes of course.
