Oregon dropping AI tool used in child abuse cases
AP via MSN ^ | June 2, 2022 | Sally Ho and Garance Burke

Child welfare officials in Oregon will stop using an algorithm to help decide which families are investigated by social workers, opting instead for a new process that officials say will make better, more racially equitable decisions.

The move comes weeks after an Associated Press review of a separate algorithmic tool in Pennsylvania that had originally inspired Oregon officials to develop their model, and was found to have flagged a disproportionate number of Black children for “mandatory” neglect investigations when it first was in place.

Oregon's Department of Human Services announced to staff via email last month that after “extensive analysis” the agency’s hotline workers would stop using the algorithm at the end of June to reduce disparities concerning which families are investigated for child abuse and neglect by child protective services.

What the hell does “racially equitable” supposed to mean. More of that affirmative action crap? We’re supposed to be talking child abuse here. It either happens or it doesn’t happen. Skin color should not be thrown into the equation. More liberal horse dung.

How many young black children will now die to assuage some white Karen’s feelings of guilt or racial superiority?

We laugh, but...for the past several years, there have been a number of cases where the Left has suppressed the use of AI in various applications because the AI “notices” things, racially speaking, that the Left finds inconvenient.

At least the vast majority of comments on this AP story show that very few people are buying the line of baloney put out by Oregon. That is good, I guess.

Exactly.

It is why they don’t feed crime statistics into AI to boil it down for useful information.

They don’t need AI to speak the obvious. They would have to “explain” the result, and that would be uncomfortable.

Their solution would be to alter the AI algorithms to produce a more “equitable” result.

A chronic state of delusion and denial of reality is at the core of most Democrats.

“Equitable” is the key word.
Equality means everyone is judged to the same standards regardless of outcome.
Equity means standards vary to produce equal outcomes.
So, if blacks families are 13% of the of the families, then, by George, black families better only make up 13% of families investigated. Anything else is rassist.

Amazing. Now AI disproportionately affect minorities. Added to the list of things that disproportionately affect minorities.

algorithms

trees

stop and frisk

the law

math

Wuhan flu

work

I’m sure I’m missing something.

Jake Sunderland, a department spokesman, said the existing algorithm would “no longer be necessary,” since it can’t be used with the state’s new screening process.

This are not stopping using the algorithm, but replacing it was a new and better one.

Yup. So once they reach 12 or 13%, they knock it off. Abuse black kids are going to have to wait for the next fiscal year.

Of course, the new and better algo doesn’t flag people of a certain race who disproportionately abuse children for disproportionately abusing children anymore.
