More police isn't the answer after Texas shooting, experts say

The Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in Texas has its own police department, complete with four officers, a detective and security staff who patrol the campus and its entrances. This didn’t prevent a gunman from killing 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School last week.

“The research is clear that more police and hardening schools doesn’t work,” said Patrick Bresette, executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund of Texas.

This debate over school police isn’t new, though. Organizers have long pointed out the negative impacts of police in schools: Black and Latino children are more likely to be criminalized by school officers, and there are no sweeping federal laws that regulate the police use of force on students. In the last 15 years, police in schools across the country have been reported as punishing students for common childhood behaviors such as talking back to teachers and fighting.

Advocates say that discussions about school policing must acknowledge racial disparities. Schools with larger Black and Latino populations are more likely to have police officers in the halls, metal detectors and security cameras, making the students more likely to be stunned, assaulted or pepper-sprayed by police. And police often criminalize Black children for conduct considered common among kids — like mouthing off or fighting at school.

Experts say ramping up police presence at schools will disproportionately impact Black and Latino students. The University at Albany and RAND study also found that school officers’ presence leads to more suspensions, expulsions, police referrals, chronic absences and arrests for students, and Black students are two times more likely than whites to experience these consequences.

Bull....Gun free zones are just an open invitation for shooters.

What research is that, Patrick? Where are the studies?

What research is that? Is that like the research that showed the virus couldn’t be a lab leak was clear? The research that showed masks prevented disease was clear? That lockdowns work? That vaccines work?

Easier (and better) to ban public indoctrination centers that pump students full of self-esteem while depriving them of a means for self-defense, yea, even encouraging cooperation with aggressors: “Whatever you do, don’t ever fight back!”

Just curious. How many home-schooled students have gone on a shooting rampage? Answer me.

Maybe corralling staff and students into big bunches of simpering cowards is not a good idea. Maybe banning any mention of God and His Commandments is not a good idea.

Remember when all those young boys with shotguns in their pick up trucks went around killing innocent civilians? Neither do I!

Harden the Elementary Schools first, then the Middle Schools second.

Leave the Jr. Highs and High Schools alone since they already have metal detectors and resource officers.

Don’t tell me that a 9 year old Black or Latino fourth grader is going to be traumatized by having a man-trap entrance and a resource officer at the front desk.

What is the necessity of having "sweeping federal laws" for that?

It seems to me that especially post-floyd that the media is basically saying blacks/hispanics are going to act like feral criminals and nothing can or even should be done to stop it.

Punishing bad behavior just isn’t fair.

Gee.....They're not being stunned, assaulted, or pepper-sprayed by police just because of their skin-color alone.......it's because they're the ones making trouble. Just my opinion.

Israel does well with their armed school guards and hardened schools.

Typical leftist LIARS.

In order for security and police to function, they have to show up and work.

The school security officer was AWOL and did not engage the shooter as was falsely reported initially.

The police stood down for over 40 minutes, allowing a classroom full of children to me easily massacred. The firearm did not matter at that point, as the killer had all the time in the world.

NBC (Nothing But Crap) claims to report on “experts” (later referring to “advocates”), but the identified expert is just the executive director of the Children’s Defense Fund of Texas, a leftist D.I.E. organization.

........well, at the Broward County school the school’s on site cop ran and hid. At Uvalde, Arredondo effectively did the same thing.

I watched a 43 minute video about Philly street cops. These guys were not scared of anybody or any situation. All had been shot at multiple times over their years of service in Philly.

Until we start hiring cops like the Philly cops I speak of, that have demonstrated fearlessness on their resume, instead of OLD men and others with no background of being involved in violent situations, the school shootings will continue.
