Opinion: The NRA isn't the main obstacle in US gun politics anymore (we are)
CNN ^ | May 30, 2022 | Nicole Hemmer

Posted on 05/30/2022 9:21:23 PM PDT by DoodleBob

...Following the horrific massacre of schoolchildren and teachers last week in Uvalde, Texas -- which followed the horrific massacre of mostly Black shoppers at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York -- the NRA went ahead with its planned annual convention in Houston. The convention reportedly attracted thousands of protesters and repelled a handful of scheduled performers, who withdrew after the killings in Uvalde. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick also backed out, and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott canceled his appearance, doing a pretaped video instead.

That trouble is hardly all-encompassing -- major speakers such as former President Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas still appeared before the relatively sparse and intermittently unarmed crowd. But the organization has been noticeably weakened by years of infighting and corruption.

That might sound like good news to gun reform advocates, who have for decades seen the NRA as the primary driver of gun absolutism in the United States. But even if the NRA went away tomorrow, gun politics in the United States would not change. In many ways, the NRA has already won: It has fundamentally transformed the Republican Party, gun jurisprudence and conservative political identity in ways that will continue even if the NRA fades.

...

For those Americans desperate for more gun regulation, a singular focus on the NRA is not enough. Instead, they must work to strengthen and broaden the infrastructure of gun safety and gun regulation organizations, support a judiciary commitment to a narrow reading of the Second Amendment and make clear that the radicalization of the right on guns is not solely about donations from the NRA, but a deeper commitment to the most radical gun absolutism in US history.

Part of the reason the left is freaking out over Roe's possible repeal, is that they failed to inculcate in GenZers a passion for abortion and as a galvanizing "right." It's sort of your grandparent's jam.

In contrast, there are zillions of youths who'd get peeved if the 2nd Amendment was on the ropes. I also suspect the youths aren't swayed by the anti-gun media blitz. That's because we've inculcated in our progeny (and, unlike the left with abortion, we didn't kill our progeny) a love and understanding of natural rights, original intent, and we've taken them out to the range.

Their anger with us, is partly a projection of self-loathing.

The communists never like it when ordinary people push back against the authoritarian onslaught.

ABCPBSPNBCNN sure is ramped up on the gun-control-mantra.

Hope they hang their hats on abortion and gun confiscation.

The cliches’ alone will provide endless entertainment.

The CNN thug who wrote this also conveniently ignores the extinct species that was called “Blue Dog Democrat”. Please keep up the charades so the GOP can finish the job on Manchin, Tester and the few remaining others in the next two cycles.

Or put another way, CNN is giving America a damning glimpse of what CNN and other communistic propagandists mean when they talk about “democracy.” It is not — in their minds — rule by the will of the people. The term “democracy” in their mouths means universal subservience to their will.

Another month, another record!

Will the record breaking ever stop?

Looks like it will never stop.

I have never been a member of the NRA.
It seemed like they spent more on suits for Wayne than for 2A protection in recent years.

The main obstacle to more gun laws is the American people.

Support a judiciary that ignores the Constitution and the law. Support a judiciary that abandons its role as a judiciary.

You really need to read the highly suppressed out of print 1982 Senate report on the 2nd Amendment. I have a paper copy.

https://guncite.com/journals/senrpt/senrpt.html

“The conclusion is thus inescapable that the history, concept, and wording of the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, as well as its interpretation by every major commentator and court in the first half-century after its ratification, indicates that what is protected is an individual right of a private citizen to own and carry firearms in a peaceful manner.”

19th century cases
16. * Wilson v. State, 33 Ark. 557, at 560, 34 Am. Rep. 52, at 54 (1878).

“If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the (p.17)penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of constitutional privilege.”

17. * Jennings v. State, 5 Tex. Crim. App. 298, at 300-01 (1878).

“We believe that portion of the act which provides that, in case of conviction, the defendant shall forfeit to the county the weapon or weapons so found on or about his person is not within the scope of legislative authority. * * * One of his most sacred rights is that of having arms for his own defence and that of the State. This right is one of the surest safeguards of liberty and self-preservation.”

18. * Andrews v. State, 50 Tenn. 165, 8 Am. Rep. 8, at 17 (1871).

“The passage from Story (Joseph Story: Comments on the Constitution) shows clearly that this right was intended, as we have maintained in this opinion, and was guaranteed to and to be exercised and enjoyed by the citizen as such, and not by him as a soldier, or in defense solely of his political rights.”

19. * Nunn v. State, 1 Ga. (1 Kel.) 243, at 251 (1846).

“’The right of the people to bear arms shall not be infringed.’ The right of the whole people, old and young, men, women and boys, and not militia only, to keep and bear arms of every description, and not such merely as are used by the militia, shall not be infringed, curtailed, or broken in upon, in the smallest degree; and all this for the important end to be attained: the rearing up and qualifying a well-regulated militia, so vitally necessary to the security of a free State.”

And the SCOTUS case that led to the Civil War..

Are Negros citizens...Dred Scott
“It would give to persons of the negro race, who are recognized as citizens in any one state of the Union, the right to enter every other state, whenever they pleased.... and it would give them full liberty of speech in public and in private upon all subjects upon which its own citizens might meet; to hold public meetings upon political affairs, and to KEEP AND CARRY ARMS wherever they went.”

Thank you. My go-to paper for SCOTUS on the 2nd Amendment is this magnificence from David Kopel.

You want to see death on a scale of tens of millions, disarm the people and let the collectivists have power.

It is coming over here. They will just continue shooting up schools until the sheep demand they take their guns and make them feel safe. As they did in the U.K. How long it will take is open to speculation. Each year the population is being dumbed down. The youth are becoming more fearful of guns. The males are being more feminized.

Mika Brzezinski February 22, 2017. "[Trump] could have undermined the messaging so much that he can actually control uh exactly what people think and that is the that is our job."

Here is a fact that all the activists who try to "teach them while they are young" and politically indoctrinate children miss. Kids catch on to the manipulation. When they grow up, they do not think much of those who tried to manipulate them and will side with the opposing politics. A lot of Gen Xs, Ys, Zs, and eventually Gen As (is it me, or did every generation after the "Baby Boomers" get a really lame name?), aren't so much conservative, as they grew up catching on that the political left is the bigger problem.

These people are too dumb to realize that the more shootings like in Uvalde, the more people will start to support the second amendment.

Yep. They undermined the narrative when they reported on the failure of the local PD to actually do anything for 40+ minutes.

I left after 20 years because of that corruption. I only support GOA and 2nd Amendment Foundation now.

I will rejoin only after Wayne leaves.

For decades the NRA was the bogeyman of Leftists. Thanks to Wayne and his cronies, the NRA has been dramatically weakened and yet the gun rights side of the argument has been steadily gaining ground. This despite the gun grabbers being massively better financed thanks to Bloomberg and his vast fortune of $55 billion.

It looks like its finally starting to dawn on Lefties that the NRA is not the source of support for gun rights. Its only the vehicle. The source of support for our constitutional right to keep and bear arms is the tens of millions of us who supported the NRA and who still support other gun rights organizations like the Second Amendment Foundation, Gun Owners of America, our various state organizations, etc.
