Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed a law removing an upper age limit on the Russian military, meaning over-40s can now serve.

The law was passed just over three months after Russia invaded Ukraine, amid heavy Russian losses said to be limiting its ability to fight.

The invasion, which Putin and his inner circle expected to be swift and decisive, instead proved protracted and deadly for Russia.

Western officials estimate that some 15,000 Russians have been killed. Ukraine on Saturday claimed to have killed 30,000, while Russia has not given recent figures of its own.

“Allowing” is a funny way of saying, “You will serve or you die.”

“amid heavy Russian losses”

“Western officials estimate that some 15,000 Russians have been killed.”

The Russians lost approximately 27 million military and civilians during WWII, not including the poor souls sent to slave camps in Siberia or otherwise murdered by their own government. And now we are suppose to believe that they consider 15,000 to be “heavy losses” and can't go on without getting oldsters to join the military.

The problem they have is the same in all of Europe and among persons of European decent all over the world... they are not reproducing and have fewer and fewer young people and children. But there are plenty of oldsters running around and many of them consider themselves to be bad a$$e$ willing and capable of going to war. We can see something similar here with the number of armchair generals itching to get others into the fight or at least get back to their “Call of Duty” video game.

I saw a video out of Ukraine that said Putin was offering $5000 a month, which is a years salary for many of these people. But they aren’t told what kind of conditions they will be facing. And once they get to Ukraine and realize it’s a war, they quit.

Imagine being a 40 year old and having some drill sergeant get in your face. A good call for fragging. Since the NCO’s get no respect in their military they’ll be the ones doing it.

I wonder how the Putin apologists will spin this? Why would a country with 100 million more inhabitants than Ukraine need to resort to such a measure?

because it seems like the rushkies are getting their butts kicked.

Yes, it seems that way if you get your news from the Daily Mail or one of its subsidiaries. In reality, Putin has likely got a shortage of young people who want to serve in the military. He may have quite a few men over 40 who believe that they can show the youngsters how it should be done.

Unfortunately, in our own country less than 29% of even those between the ages of 18 and 24 can pass the army's current standards... And this drops off dramatically as a person's age increases and they get closer to 35, the oldest who are currently allowed to enlist in the army. Why? The vast majority are way too fat and out of shape to make good soldiers. People over 40 here are absolutely pathetic, yours truly included.

Yet, we have an entire cabal of armchair generals here who believe that they could kick Russian butt. In some ways it is too bad that wars aren't fought by people over 40. They likely would not last very long. But in reality, most of the rest of the world has people over 40 who are in better shape than people here and would kick our butts.

All the new technology doesn't change the need for soldiers to be in shape.

Well excuse me... Within the Soviet Union, “Russia withstood the highest number of casualties, with 6,750,000 military deaths and 7,200,000 civilian deaths.” That is approximately 14 million Russian deaths vs 15 thousand “estimated” at this time.

Yes, that makes a big difference.

Have you ever visited Russia?

Thanks to the vodka and poverty your average 40 year old Russian looks like a 60 year old American.
