Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Sunday that bipartisan negotiations on possible gun legislation are now underway, coming days after a mass shooting in Texas that left 21 dead.
Speaking to ABC News, Murphy, an ally of President Joe Biden, said that possible legislation includes expanding the federal gun background check system, red flag laws, and laws around storing weapons.
“We’re talking about red flag laws. We’re talking about strengthening and expanding the background check system, if not universal background checks. We’re talking about safe storage. And yes, we’re also talking about mental health resources and more security dollars for schools,” Murphy said, claiming that their bill “could have a significant downward pressure” on shootings.
“Maybe that’s the most important thing we could do is just show that progress is possible and that the sky doesn’t fall for Republicans if they support some of these commonsense measures,” he said.
Several days ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) directed Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) to lead GOP negotiations with Democrats, including Murphy. After the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012, Murphy and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) were involved in efforts to pass gun control legislation.
When asked by CNN last week about red flag laws, background checks, or other measures, McConnell stated that he told the Texas senator “to meet with the Democrats who are interested in getting a bipartisan solution and come up with a proposal, if possible, that’s crafted to meet this particular problem.”

“...Top Democrat Senator: ‘Serious’ Bipartisan Negotiations on Gun Control Underway.).”
Very, very bad sign.
The letter after the name means jack anymore.
The only reason political parties still exist is to give voters the illusion of choice.
A pol is either loyal to our former republic or to Deep State.
The pols supporting infringement of the Second Amendment are Deep State.
How about more funding for police?
Oh wait...
Forget that crap.
2 Globalist pukes carry no weight with Texans. (Yes, Cornyn is a Texas Senator and a DemLite.)
This is going to go nowhere because it doesn’t go far enough for the Left and most Republican Senators aren’t going to support this when momentum is on the GOP’s side this year.
Sounds like the Ukraine War supporters are on to their next project.
WV is a HUGE gun state Manchin better walk lightly!!
If Murphy is a Top Senator, we are in series macaca.
In 1994, "assault weapons" were more of a curio item. They weren't really popular with most gun owners. Today, the AR-15 is the most popular rifle in America with 20 million currently in circulation and another 4,000 sold each day (thanks entirely to the 1994 ban).
Detach emotionally from the issue and just try to comprehend the logistics of what a ban would entail. To even pass the senate, compromise would be required. The end result would likely be a ban similar to 1994 that went after cosmetic features while grandfathering in all the currently owned weapons. Between the ban's signing and the day of effect, there's be a mass run on these firearms and magazines Factories would be working 24/7 to meet demand. Imagine easily another 5-10 million sold.
The right has also learned a few things from the left, particularly that it's OK to ignore laws you don't like. Half the elected county sheriffs would run and win on promises to not enforce any gun bans. Conservative state legislatures would write favorable 2A laws into their constitutions (just as blue states are doing with abortion). Finally, red state governors would declare their states "Second Amendment Sanctuaries" and snub their noses at federal laws. Manufacturers would relocate to these states and continue business as usual.
They don’t want to protect kids. Lives are expendable in their pursuit of power.
I guess that those RINOs (I’ll leave the record breaking list of four-letter words preceding ‘RINO’) really want to be doxed and treated in a manner that’ll make BLM look like boy scouts. Not advocating it, of course, but I’ll record it if it does and watch it every day.
This would just be the start.
Which means the GOP will surrender as usual.
The question to ask is, “How would this proposed law have prevented this incident?” If they can’t address this question then they are just opportunists exploiting a tragedy.
The votes aren't there to pass this. That's why Schumer himself backed away immediately in the aftermath of the shooting.
Just more Kabuki theatre by McConnell to get gun control off the table as an issue for the midterms.
I thought it was not a war but rather a special military operation and you supported it.
Adding more gun laws to the thousands already on the books is just going to make these Swamp creatures feel good about themselves without doing anything. American popular culture, the moral breakdown of our society, the wrecking of the nuclear family and our wrecked public school and mental health systems are by far the biggest culprits in producing messed up American zombies like the shooter in Uvalde.
Yup, this is the one you’ve been waiting for, folks.
