A House Democrat has introduced a bill that would suspend congressional pay every month there is a shooting that kills more than four people.

Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver proposed the legislation Thursday, two days after a deadly shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

"The time for thoughts and prayers has come and gone — now is the time for concrete action," he said in a press release

I can almost agree with this, except it should not give the pay back at the end of session.

But I have to wonder if this would encourage mass shootings to get back at congress?

I find it interesting that Hispanic politicians seem to be really wanting action. Where were they during the hundreds of other mass shootings that go on every year? I just hate when race is part of the whole conversation.

They’d better exempt major cities like Chicago and LA or they’ll never get paid at all. There’s a “mass shooting” in one of those places once a month at least. ‘Course the shooters ain’t white, so. . . . .

I've had a similar thought about why schools and nightclubs are targeted. With the exception of a WalMart and the supermarket in Buffalo, they don't seem to target even softer targets like stores and malls.

Almost like it is a game for sick people to see if they can get in a school and kill kids.

Wouldn’t hut them in the least. Most of the income is through backdoors. The offices will still have staff, and meals are free.

Some clever Republican should attach a "rider" specifying that pay would likewise be suspended every month more than 10,000 illegal aliens cross our southern border!

I can't imagine this is Constitutional; it reads like a bill of attainder, a punishment singling out Congressmen.

Also, why do they need a bill to suspend pay? Doesn't the Constitution allow each chamber to set their own rules?

I don’t think this is constitutional.

Because each chamber can set its own rules, the Constitutional problem comes from asking the Senate to ratify House rules.

I would both make the pay forfeit and make the baseline “four kill or wounded” which will ensure that until Christ comes again (at least to Chicago) Congresscritters will both be aware of Black-on-Black violence and not get paid.

Hold their pay until they figure out how to deal with insane kids who come from shitty homes that attack schools after years of red flags? Being back the psych wards please.

these crazy shooters are on drugs that render them homicidal. school is the environment they are mostly used to and have memories of being tormented and disrespected. the young man that ran into the school was chased in there and took it out on the class he took refuge in. schools are what they know.

Suspended all pay until laws on the books are enforced, why cherry pick!

I’m for this idea for inflation, since the government directly causes it.

I have no problem with holding back salaries for bad performance, but these Congresscritters should have to additionally refund past pay back to the beginning of the session if they attempt to solve problems by stripping civil rights away from law abiding citizens (e.g., restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms, passing insane legislation like the Patriot Act, etc)

“I’ve had a similar thought about why schools and nightclubs are targeted. “

You’ve hit on a valuable question. Here’s my take. These shooters want infamy. They want that moment of fame they’ve been dreaming of for their entire life. If they had talent or were more on the ball, they’d be pushing for some kind of content to go viral. But they have zero talent. They’re losers and this shooting is their one opportunity to achieve fame. We live in a culture that worships celebrity. They are trying to be the focus of that worship. The fact that they will not be around to enjoy it, well, they haven’t thought that far ahead, or their potential fate is not as real to them as the fame they know they’ll get.

This is one reason why it should be illegal to use their names and photos in the news. If they knew no one would ever know who they were, the almost certainly wouldn’t do it.

This shooter apparently got a lot of attention from his “bros” by telling them ahead of time he was going to do it. There may be some follow-on prosecutions of those other users if the law allows it.

The Congress critters don’t care about their puny pay. It’s chicken feed compared to the under-the-table filthy lucre they’re scooping up from lobbyists, Soros, Ukraine, etc. Paychecks are lunch money to them.

Congress cannot decree ethics, morality, decency, honor, integrity, virtue, etc for all of these come from God, and the influence of His Holy Spirit among those who chose to allow it. Humans are inherently sinful and society will degrade into hate, selfishness and chaos if left to it’s own pursuit.

The only option Congress would have is to take away all freedoms and rule with an iron hand. That, of course would only create horrors that far surpass the evil of school shootings.

Freedom cannot exist without a true belief in God. Our founding fathers knew this, even the ones who were not particularly “religious”, they understood it and that is why our nation was founded on “in God we Trust” and “one nation, under God…”

Dealing with school shootings must be dealt with on a community level and realistically that will only work among a “Godly” people.

I have a better idea. Term limits for every politician. This way others can figure out how to solve the problems with society. And no lifetime benefits. You serve your country then go back to the job you had before. And if you didn’t have a job before, learn to code.
