‘Woke’ U.S. Companies Relearn An Old Lesson: Profits Before Politics
I & I ^ | May 27, 2022 | I & I Editorial Board

Posted on 05/27/2022 7:48:34 AM PDT by Hojczyk

In recent years, a rash of companies suddenly discovered a new “woke” identity, taking sides with the left in America’s ongoing cultural civil war. Now, after a powerful popular backlash, many of those same companies are retreating from the fight. Smart move.

Companies have apparently discovered that Instapundit’s oft-quoted rhyme, “Get woke, go broke,” isn’t a joke. It’s more like an economic truism.

Americans, it seems, don’t like having their cherished cultural, personal, religious and moral beliefs belittled, diminished and ridiculed by the very corporations they do business with.

The latest company to suffer for its wokeness is State Farm, not exactly known for its cutting-edge social activism. And yet, its recent foray into identity politics through a partnership with a group called The Gender Cool Project alarmed even its own employees with its alienating message to customers.

The “partnership” was intended to donate books on transgenderism and gender fluidity to schools in an effort to “increase representation of LGBTQ+ books and support our communities in having challenging, empowering, and important conversations with children Age 5+.”

But “after the CEO reportedly heard from more than 2,000 independent State Farm agents nationwide (and probably a flood of customers), the company announced that it was ending its partnership with The GenderCool Project,” as RedState reported.

So much for Woke Insurance.

Similar things are happening across the country, as companies get woke to a different reality: Americans largely don’t like companies meddling in politics and social issues, and prefer not to be lectured by woke CEOs about raising their children.

The trend has picked up speed following a relentless stock market sell-off in in recent weeks.

I recently kicked dollar shave club to the curb after many years of being a customer....I discovered they donate heavily to blm.

In an exit survey they asked me why I was dumping ‘em....my answer was what I just stated and get woke go broke.

That’s what makes a capitalist society so great.....OPTIONS

It can be a tough lesson to learn, but they’ll eventually learn it one way or another....looks like most of em are learning it the hard way.
Stupid does as stupid is.
Business is tough. It’s even tougher when they’re stupid.

Gillette lost me and my dollars to their “toxic masculinity” ads. Their clueless CEO doubled down after the company lost tons of money over it though. That’s irresponsible to stockholders but they don’t care.

Amazon have their own brand of razors and blades (Solimo) that works as well as branded ones for a fraction of the price.

If I was a State Farm customer, the minute they ran the first new “Jake” commercial with a completely different actor, I would have cancelled my coverage then.

It’s hard to improve on Nobel-winning economist Milton Friedman’s insight in a now-famous 1970 column in the New York Times Magazine: “There is one and only one social responsibility of business — to use its resources and engage in activities designed to improve its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game, which is to say, engages in open and free competition, without deception and fraud.”

Concluding paragraph.

I did the same with Harry’s. I’m anxiously awaiting my new shaving gear. It’s supposed to ship by Father’s Day.

I was watching a “vinyl records channel” video on a channel I’d just subscribed to. The title was about “whack a mole” and purely a political rant. He did the standard leftist insults of us conservatives. So I responded. I told him I go to his channel to get away from politics, and if I had a mind to, I could counter all of his arguments in spades. I told him that it was a shame I had to unsubscrive so soon.

He responded, but interestingly, Yesterday, he responded in his latest video, very briefly. He basically paraphrased what I said as “I didn’t come here for the politics or the mass shootings. I came here for the music.” Oh, and prefaced it with, “Some wanker will say...”. It demonstrates that it got under his skin and I don’t think he realizes that that sort of thing makes him a part of the “get woke, go broke” crowd. Not that he lives by the videos.

But it was interesting. His partner in the video said it was , “like only five guys”. Which actually misses the point. They simply couldn’t get their politics out of staying with the “brand” of the channel.

His attitude was actually very much like my son’s “partner”. Like this channel, they live in Seattle, and on capital hill. The “partner” is one of those kneejerk leftists that is a textbook case of arrogant ignorance. And he blerts it out constantly. He drives the family nuts, but we’re able to mostly ignore him. He as no sense of humor, BTW.

But yeah, all of the other channels I use for various how-to stuff or my hobbies stick to their brand purpose. The challenge guys like this have is, beyond a lack of professionalism, they think that their tiny circle of friends within the bubble represent most of the world. They don’t.

If politics IS your channel’s brand purpose, great. Stick to it. If not, it will kill your brand if you delve into it. Start another channel on politics if you just “have to” get it off your chest.

BTW, that channel has 21k subscribers.

The author is missing something.
They don’t care about profits any more. They care only about power.
Ernst Stavro Blofeld, er, I mean Klaus Schwab has called on his minions to engage in “stakeholder capitalism” that advances Progressivism over profits. The profits aren’t important - they’re just other people’s investment. Only power counts.

Wish it were so, but the “retreat” from corporate wokism is ten steps forward, one step back. Marxism/wokism rules are being baked into corporate culture by the SEC. If corporations were serious about getting back to profits, they’d offer serious opposition to the SEC’s proposed rules around ESG and climate reporting, which doesn’t seem to be happening. It looks like BlackRock and Larry Fink are in charge, and until they are gone, this “retreat” is just a temporary consolidation of wokist gains.

That might be fine if Amazon wasn’t on my chit list as well. I’d suggest Jeremy’s razors.
