The United States on Tuesday warned Turkey against launching a new military operation in northern Syria, saying the uneasy NATO ally would be putting US troops at risk.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday that Turkey would soon launch a new military operation into northern Syria to create a 30-kilometer (19-mile) "security zone" along the border.

"We are deeply concerned about reports and discussions of potential increased military activity in northern Syria and, in particular, its impact on the civilian population," State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

"We condemn any escalation. We support maintenance of the current cease-fire lines," he said.

I'm not seeing very many nations represented here that the USA should be allied with at all.

“Our NATO ‘ally’ Turkey.”

Turkey is what is known as a “fair-weather friend.”

A wise man once said, “Countries don’t have friends; they have interests.”

The War in Europe was mostly won by Soviet blood. Stalin knew it, was furious about - and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it. We were not going to invade France until we were good and ready.

“...saying the uneasy NATO ally would be putting US troops at risk.”

Easy solution - pull our 2,000 troops out. After all, they are the ONLY foreigners in Syria who weren’t invited in (at least until Turkey liberates the northern strip).

That’s right.

Stalin was just fine with his ally Hitler’s conquests and even helped defeat Poland. Then in June, 1941 everything changed.

It was mostly an alliance of convenience. Hitler needed time after conquering Poland to defeat France and the free Western countries. So, they gave Stalin a piece of the action to let Hitler do that.

The Sov's needed more time to rebuild their army after the damage was done in Stalin's purges. They weren't finished when the Nazis invaded; hence they could run wild until up against Moscow and Leningrad.

Yes. And the US and UK want to send an armed naval escort to accompany Ukrainian ships loaded with wheat through the Black Sea, the Bosporus, and the Dardanelles, to the Mediterranean. Guess Turkey will have something to say about that (they control the entrance to the Black Sea).

Some are speculating that acceptance of Turkey’s annexation of more land in the Syrian Kurdish areas, is the price that Erdogan will extort to allow Sweden and Turkey into NATO.
