At least 14 children are dead, as well as a teacher and the suspected gunman after a Texas elementary school shooting, Gov. Greg Abbott said.
The suspect is 18-year-old Uvalde, Texas, resident Salvador Ramos, Abbott told reporters at a press conference. It is believed the suspect was killed by responding law enforcement.
Officers said Ramos acted alone in his alleged rampage at Uvalde Elementary School, which has students in 2nd through 4th grade.
The shooting occurred during Uvalde School District's last week in session before the summer break, authorities said.
Ramos was a student at Uvalde High School and killed his grandmother before the alleged rampage, the Uvalde County Sheriff’s Office told the National Review.
Sources originally reported that the shooter was in custody.
"Texans across the state are grieving for the victims of this senseless crime and for the community of Uvalde," Texas Republican Gov. Abbott wrote in a press release. He said he directed state law enforcement agencies to help local officials respond to the tragedy.
The border town of Uvalde has about 16,000 residents and is about an hour and a half drive from San Antonio, where several patients were transferred to University Health for treatment.
All Uvalde school district activities are canceled, and a press conference will be held later this afternoon, the school stated.

Why would I be joking? I’m not.
My discussion with the other person I talked to had him bringing up schizophrenia and parents out of nowhere but yet seemingly inferring that and they had a link to this, which then necessitated the response I gave.
And my response of “I guess we’ll find out” doesn’t eliminate that conservative sources of information concerning the shooter won’t be given here at FR. In fact, given how good the people here are at obtaining reliable info, I imagine the truth will come out.
As for the black supremacist shooter, there is a plethora of information here about him if you’d bother to look for it.

I never said “under penalty” or “severe legal consequences.” It is a civil liability issue.
I once had a case where a 39 yr old son lived with his mom. He obviously had a serious mental problem. He asked one day and his mom went out and bought him a 9mm. He then went to the fence in the backyard, shot and killed the neighbor’s dog and then shot the neighbor. Luckily he was not a good shot and only hit him in the thigh.
The Mom was held civilly liable for gross negligence.

What are the patents supposed to do if they think 1) their child has schizophrenia and 2) is likely to be violent?
It is almost impossible to force a legal adult into treatment. You might be able to force a child, but is the care actually available, and will insurance pay at all, let alone long enough to help the child, without bankrupting the family?
What if the person does not respond to treatment, and is dangerous? Will you fund hospitals that are humane, long-term, and expensive?
What if we become a society that declares dissidents mentally ill?

I didn’t say to scrap it. You stated it was “past time for arming teachers and hardening schools”, I agree and showed you where Abbott promised to do exactly that four years ago.
So what progress has Abbott made with his plan since he announced it? How many schools has it been implemented in so far? What are the results? Did this particular school receive any funding, upgrades, etc.? If so, how and in what way were their efforts defeated?
Don’t worry, I’m not trying to assign you “homework” and I don’t hold you personally accountable for the answers. I’m asking valid questions that the Abbott administration should address.
