Chinese and Roman societies did very well for many centuries when duty to one’s parents was a primary virtue. Not perfectly, but reverence for ones ancestors was a good measure of the moral virtue of a man.

Yes, but I always resisted the idea that being old makes you wise. I went off pretty hard on my liberal grandma when I use to post on facebook. My wife told me I should respect my elders. I wasn’t so sure.
