Chinese and Roman societies did very well for many centuries when duty to one’s parents was a primary virtue. Not perfectly, but reverence for ones ancestors was a good measure of the moral virtue of a man.

While the Roman Empire, for example, was a pagan society, the citizens of responded recognizably to the natural law, indelibly written, as it were, by God himself, upon the heart of every man.
