Vladimir Putin underwent 'successful' cancer surgery last week and is recovering, it has been claimed in just the latest rumour about the Russian leader's health.
The 69-year-old underwent an unknown procedure late last Monday following advice from medics that treatment was 'essential', according to Telegram channel General SVR which claims to be getting information from inside the Kremlin.
Putin's condition was said to have worsened briefly on Friday night before improving, the social media account said, while adding that doctors have advised he avoid taking part in meetings for several more days while he recovers.
General SVR said last week that all of Putin's appearances on state media since Tuesday have been faked using stock footage to give the impression he is well.
In reality, the country is actually being run by ex-FSB spy chief and current security council chair Nikolai Patrushev, the channel claims.

Cancer doesn’t necessarily mean he’s on his death bed undergoing Chemo and radiation.
He’s had many pictures of him riding around on a horse with no shirt on, he could have had a couple of skin cancers spots taken off.
Or he could have pancreatic cancer and has 6 months to live.
Would not be the first time in history that an autocratic leader with a terminal illness made a nihilistic, catastrophic, bad decision before he exited this realm.
I hope it hurts.
If I am not mistaken Hugo Chavez also underwent successfully cancer surgery.

Chavez died about 18 months after his first successful cancer surgery.
Preferably the latter for Putin. May it be agonizing to the end.

I’ve had pancreatitis. I would not wish it on my worst enemy.
It would in interesting if someone knew what the cancer was, and what the operation was.
These days “undergoing a cancer operation” can mean so many things as to be an essentially useless comment.
But in the end, for “us” it doesn’t really matter.
Cancer is not fun. Treatments are not fun. I can only hope he is getting the best Russian Medical Care possible—which would be akin to medieval torture for those of us in the west.
