ased on the barrage of television ads and mailers leading up to Tuesday's primary election in Arkansas, it's obvious who the most influential Republicans in the state are.
Tom Cotton's making the case for fellow Sen. John Boozman, talking up his conservative bona fides while the two-term senator fends off challenges from the right. Donald Trump's image appears in ads for Boozman and for Sarah Sanders, who served as the former president's White House press secretary and is now running for governor. Sanders, whose endorsement is almost as sought after as Trump's, is helping make the closing argument for Boozman in a TV ad.
But conspicuously missing from the ads and the campaign trail is the state's top elected Republican, Gov. Asa Hutchinson, who is entering the final stretch of his term with strong approval ratings and a raised national profile. Hutchinson's advisers say that's because he's concentrating on helping more Republicans nationally as he looks to the future — which might include a White House bid.
But it's also a sign of just how much the party that Hutchinson spent decades building here has shifted farther to the right and how much the state's politics have become nationalized. In competitive primaries where Republicans are trying to out-Trump each other, even a longtime GOP figure in the state like Hutchinson doesn't provide as much of a bump, especially if he's not known for being very hard-edged.

Strong approval ratings from where?
The party base has not really shifted to the right.
How much the old party deceived its base about how far left it was has been exposed.
Sounds like having Jake Bequette in the Senate would be entertaining.
Clinton Republicans?
The news media is so discredited, so fake, that it's just pathetic. They can't just admit that conservatives aren't playing their game where the media chooses their candidates anymore. We know if a Republican is fawned over by the media like Hogan or Hutchinson, that's a red flag.
I’m leaning his way.
#1 he's not running for office.
#2 an endorsement from him may not be advantageous or could even backfire.
It sure isn't from the Arkansas voters.
Pantywaist is a perfect description.
In lace panties, I bet.
Boozman -— NO.
Hutchinson -— NO, for president, hell NO.
Hutchinson is a RINO. His political career is over.
He was on CNN this morning. I just happened to flip by it.,
“ Term limits are our friend especially in this case.”
Sorry, but unless you term limit staff too, you are cutting your own throat. There’s not a career politician I respect, but there’s not a single staffer of said career politicians that I don’t despise even more.
Term limit elected officials without limiting staff too you get an omnipotent swamp. More James Clappers and Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman’s in every bureaucratic office from 1600 Pennsylvania Ave down to the dogcatcher in any town, USA.
Your lips to God’s ears. This guy “coulda been a contender”, but IMHO, he squandered every opportunity to step up and lead like a man, instead he chose a different path.
Asa Hutchinson is leaving with his reputation intact—please, clap. Maybe enforcing state laws after the Supremes rule per abortion will remove some of the glitter qualities of this magic RINO moderate unicorn.
Sarah is speaking to the AP? Wow. The Arkansas Democrat Gazette will have a jealously fit—Talk Business & Politics, too.
