Russia cuts off gas to Finland, promises more military bases .... and sets up middle-aged recruitment?

Let the record show that Russia may see cutting off its future revenues as a lesser price to pay than denting Vladimir Putin’s ego. And that could very well be a rational calculation, given the tremendously destabilizing impact that a humiliation in Ukraine would likely produce. However, the humiliations stacking up on the other side of the equation carry a cost too, sometimes literally :

Russia will cut natural gas supplies to Finland on Saturday, according to Finland’s state energy provider, the latest salvo in a growing confrontation between the two countries over the war in Ukraine.

Finland this week applied to join NATO, reversing a longstanding policy of military neutrality and angering Russia, which sees the eastward expansion of the alliance as a threat to its national security. Moscow had previously threatened “retaliation” if Finland joined NATO. The two countries share an 830-mile border.

The ostensible reason for the halt in Russian gas exports, though, was a dispute over payments that had been rumbling for weeks.

Gasum, the Finnish energy provider, said on Friday that Russia was suspending the supply of natural gas to Finland starting at 7 a.m. the next morning because the country had failed to comply with Moscow’s demand to make payments in rubles. The move comes just days after Moscow also suspended electricity exports to Finland, citing payment issues.

A tough road ahead in the immediate future. Finland may be betting on a US oil energy resurgence in 2025. We have no influence on Finlands intentions/wishes or NATO application-nor should we. Hitler was stupid to declare war on the US. How was he gonna bomb us with no long range bombers? Let Putin pay the price. Make surety average Ivan feels it.

It is pretty much Iraq vs Iran.

The war? Yes. The people? No. I support the Ukrainians despite yeah, they're corrupt. But they're improving and they're working hard on it. We can't really say the same for Russia.

I was thinking of it along the lines of a vendor announcing they accept Venmo, but me telling the vendor “I’m using PayPal” instead.

Russia is having no trouble finding buyers for their gas.

I always feel sorry for the people. Very few of them have anything to do with what is happening.

But I just see either government calling the other what they both are.

Having said that, invading your neighbor is not exactly the way to win friends and influence people.

So I stick with my question.

Is Russia really stupid or is the government there being bought off to get traditionally neutral countries to join NATO.

Because that is the predictable result of this.

In other news, Finland already has new partners for energy imports. They announced a trade deal today with Estonia, a far more reliable partner

That sounds like the Europe is just cannibalizing its own energy resources...what they need are *new* sources of energy, not more "sharing" existing resources amongst themselves.

More confirmation of the atrocities against civilians that the Azov pigs carried out in Mariupol.

I have friends with family in the city, so I know this is true.

Don't let them gaslight you, and never forget—the Zelensky regime was deliberately killing Ukrainian civilians.

I think Germany and Minister Habeck have ceased filling the stolen Gazprom storage facilities [they were preparing for winter], and are dishing out natgas to the rublerefuseniks like Poland and Bulgaria.

Either Russia is being really stupid or they are allowing themselves to be used.

Or the drumbeat of NATO expansionism was going to go on and on.

NATO wants to expand into the South China Sea and the Western Pacific.

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

The Russians had two options. One bad, one really bad.

They either had to attack, or watch the Kiev regime launch their planned spring 2022 attack on the Donbass, watch them be accepted into NATO and you can no longer do anything forever. Also in spring of 2021 Zelinsky said they were going to pursue an atomic bomb.

So it was do nothing and be left with a forever enemy on your border and watch the ethnic cleansing turn into an all out attack, or go ahead and roll. That’s why they launched it.

They tried to offer talks, but we flipped them the finger and literally said we would do whatever we pleased.

“Hitler was stupid to declare war on the US.”

He really had to after Pearl Harbor. One of the biggest reasons he had to declare war, was that he needed to be able to unleash his submarine force against US shipping that was massively supplying the Brits and Russians. Also our navy was escorting convoys deep into the Atlantic. That was a dynamic Hitler had to stop. His generals and admirals were begging him to at that point. So when the Japs bombed Pearl Harbor, they decided it was time.

But not declaring war on us would have also resulted in his demise. In reality, he was doomed no matter what he did.

I was thinking along those lines also.

I’m not sure that pool is going to be as helpful as might
be thought.

By that time people have a healthy dose of cynicism also.
They’re not likely to be as willing to simply go along to
fulfill the aspirations of a strong man leader.

The Finns had been paying for the gas in dollars, the customary settlement currency. The Russians decided they wanted in paid for in rubles. The Russians will sell them rubles. For dollars. The Russians trying to push back against the Finns pushing back. If Biden weren’t strangling our energy economy, we could see the Finns gas. For dollars.

But this is going to insure it does.

When you have a big neighbor who is invading it's smaller neighbors you are going to run into the arms of whoever promises to save you from the big baddie.

And as we know. Name mean little.

The European Union contains countries that are not in Europe.

It just makes no real sense for Russia to do this.

One of the biggest reasons he had to declare war, was that he needed to be able to unleash his submarine force against US shipping that was massively supplying the Brits and Russians.

All that aid would have stopped on December 8th. There was a major push at that point to halt all aid to the British because we needed it to take out Japan.

The US had no interest in getting involved in another war in Europe.

It had turned out very badly last time.

But when Hitler declared war on us the point became moot.

You understand that there's a huge price difference and convenience factor between pipeline natgas and LNG, right?

Pipeline natgas is sold under contract, for a fixed cost.

LNG is typically sold at spot market rates.

Build up your forces and wait for them to attack and you are the victim.

Attack them first and you are the aggressor.

Ukraine was never going to join NATO.

They had been dancing around this issue for years.

And for the love of mike stop treating your military like dirt!
